MG TD TF 1500 - Lost Parts MG TC 6741 HELP!

As some of you know Tom purchased some TC parts from a Columbus OH CL advert I posted on here. In the process of re-packing them for shipment to him I came across some old photos of the tub (not included in the sale) and old shipping labels for a place in Cincinnati OH.

I have been attempting to make contact with the owners of the property for quite a while. I was finally able to get an appointment with them yesterday to see if any parts were still there. Confirmed that the car was indeed there (maybe 1995 or so?) as things in the background of the pix were still there, (workbenches and such). Sadly we were unable to find any M.G. parts in any of the three buildings on the property. Very disappointing day as we had been told by several people that they thought it was still there.

In as much as I have reason to believe parts of this car at some point may / or may not have been in Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, and Dayton Ohio I am going to post the pix here once again in the hope that those on this board may print a copy and show them to members of your local Ohio clubs to see if anyone might have an idea where they ended up or possibly know the previous owner.

What we know so far:
VIN # TC 6741 lastly pained 2 tone Ivory w/ Dark Brown wings & fenders and dark brown interior.
This 1948 TC was last issued a title on 4/3/1995 in Hamilton county showing 38000 miles. Title # 3100777000 and control # 013959990. (This info I was able to find from OBMV, however they will not release name and/or address of “owner”.)
Majority of the car found in a warehouse in Columbus OH., but could have come from any of the above cities. Was definitely at Sports Car Repair Service in Milford, Oh. and worked on by Lloyd “Slim” Helson.

We have most of the car …what is missing is: Tub, wheels, and engine.

Please print the pic’s and info , show them to your club members and help us get her back together!
Thank you,
Tom & David

The main parts missing are the body tub, wheels and engine, which were presumably sold at some point. The engine is XPAG 7465, but we don't know if it had ever been replaced with another. The tub is complete with dash and instruments, but without doors, bonnet, fenders or gas tank, all of which I have!

We can't believe these parts no longer exist, and all help is very much appreciated.

Well ...for anybody "looking", don't bother we have located the rest of TC 6741.
Not a happy ending for Tom or I.

I guess on the "up side" it does look like she will rise again in that all her parts will at some point come together again.
As car rescuers I guess we have done our job.

Due diligence has uncovered some disturbing news.

A police report was filed in Milford on December 4, 2013, for a stolen trailer and MG parts inside. Me thinks the guy I picked this up from in Cbus had better come up with a better story than he gave me. Pretty sure the cops are not going to accept "It's been so long ago, I don't remember where it came from".

Please keep us informed Dave and Tom.

Since sex is not a topic on this forum (yet), maybe a little cloak & dagger will spice it up!

The family that owns the car and still has the title and body tub, is 90%+ sure they want to have the car restored now that they can get the parts back, as the elderly owner's first car was a TC. Only the engine appears to be missing still.

I'm hopeful of getting my money back, either from the scamp who sold the parts to me through his Craigslist ad, or, if not, from the family, grateful to have their parts back. There was no insurance on the parts.

"Scamp"? ...Tom is way too nice of a guy...not the same story I read.....

David Sheward 55 TF1500 # 7427

You didn't find this with it did you David?

Didn't see "Bob" LaVerne ...but then again they were both victims of "trailer theft".

That does make me wonder if the guy we got parts from has a trailer for sale? Wonder what it looked like?

To all who have inquired: these Ohio Craigslist TC parts I purchased early in the summer, and which David Sheward so impressively picked up and packed for me, turn out to have been stolen from a stalled restoration in Ohio.

I expect to have my money returned to me shortly, and the parts will be returned to the original owner who still has the engine, tub, wheels and instruments (and title!). Between the two batches of parts there is a complete car, which the owners plan to restore.

The prosecutor is considering whether to file charges against the man who sold me the parts, but they cannot at present prove his involvement in the original theft. David's and my intention all along has been to re-unite the parts, and we are at the same time disappointed that I will not be able to restore the car, but pleased that the true owner is eager to do so.

The Detective investigating the crime was surprised by our willingness to return the parts to the true owner without any fuss. I told him in no uncertain terms that MG ownership includes not only doing the right thing, but doing everything we can to return these cars to the road. I'm both disappointed, and very pleased.

Way to go Tom.

The gentleman in the center is Walter. He is happy because today all the pieces of TC6741 will all be in one place again! Loaded in a truck and headed for home. Tom & I are so happy to see this go back to the rightful owner.

So ...is that the end of the story?

IMHO ...NO! Being the gentleman that he is , Walter stepped up and returned the purchase price to Tom. My earlier comment about the seller being a weasel still applies. He has yet to make restitution by returning the ill gotten gains from selling stolen parts. My hope is he does so...but if not I will be more than happy to be the star witness in any legal proceedings.

Tune in for the next chilling chapter:

Quite a tale in the telling! We can celebrate that the original owner has the parts back and a car to restore (better lock his garage better though)... and that Tom has gotten his money back (if not all the hours and trouble for both tom and Dave)and perhaps justice will prevail over all!

Ya done good hop along. Can't wait fer next weeks episode.
MG LaVerne

Good deal. I felt really bad for everyone. Really wonderful that the guy actually paid for the parts. MG people are amazing! Sure hope they catch the crook. George

Walt is an amazing fellow.
His 1st car was a TC. Gave me a picture of it. (below)
He, his son, and the mechanic that is going to restore the TC for him sat around the garage for 4/5 hours talking. The weather was cold & wet so we didn't go for a ride in the TF (Walt's decision) so that was a disappointment, but a great day and some wonderful stories!

The way we had hoped this would go down was:
The guy that sold the parts would give Tom back the funds paid for the parts. Walter was going to give me something for my troubles (he did) as well as the guy that sold them.

The guy that sold the parts went from a story of: "Got these so long ago I don't remember where they came from". to "Somebody dumped them on his loading dock".
The time frame between when they were stolen till they ended up on CL was only about 6 months. The seller feels it's a "done deal" and does not want to return anything. IMHO: I hope he ends up with nothing and I will LMAO if it comes out that he sold the new car trailer the Parts where in as well as it was worth 2/3 times what the parts were sold for!

Walt is now stuck with trying to get his $ back from the seller but as he and his son said at least they are in the same state so that should make it easier than for Tom to have to deal with it across state lines.

Thief's take note : M.G. folks stick together and we protect our own!
