MG TD TF 1500 - Lourved Panels on a TF

I've spent a very pleasant day pressing out the louvres on the panels that fit over the inspection holes under the TF's front wings. I have used the attached photo as reference and have used aluminium. How were they originally finished? Painted body colour or silver as in the photo. I have also made them slightly smaller so the edge doesn't fit under the wing flange. Is this correct?

Jan,
Looking good. Mine overlap where you have cut to size.
Should be body coloure.

Hi Jan. Louvers were painted body color. Nice job pressing those panels.

Hi All,

The one in my original photo is the one I have copied. I attach a photo of one of my "creations". Apart from the securing holes being slightly off centre I am very pleased. I made up formers and bashed down the louvres with a big hammer. Saved me £120! If anyone wants to know how I did it send me an email.

My bad...I see the one corner is "under" the wing flap now. I thought you had cut an angle in it so it wouldn't overlap.
I put nylon washers on the screws for mine as the tin chips easy.

Hi Jan,

I would like to know how you made them. I have my originals but they are dented. I would like to just repair them. Perhaps your method can help?

Thanks!!

Panels were painted body colour and held in place by black Phillips head sheet metal screws which go into, what I call a Tinnerman clips which attached to the body panel.

Sorry, I've been off the BB for a while.

It,s probably best to make new panels. I used aluminium from a scrap electrical cabinet. The attached photo shows my crude but effective jig. I marked out ten slots, 4" long at 1 1/4" centres and slit them with a thin cutting disc on my angle grinder. The photo shows a scrap, trial piece. The corners are poor since I hadn't rounded the edges of the punch - see second posting.

This photo shows how the lourves were pressed out. The punch was a piece of scrap angle iron. Helps to protect your fingers! It was slightly less than 4" across, with rounded ends and it took about four or five bashes for each lourve. Don't miss a slot though you have to do them in order. The big block was used to clamp the aluminium with a large G clamp which is just visible.
