MG TD TF 1500 - Lucas Wiper Motor Lubrication

I have gone to the Archives but have not found an answer as to what grease or other lubrication should be used in the motor for my TD. My motor runs okay but gets very hot in use. I think it might require a lub job after all these years. Anyone have any suggestions on what should be used?

George,

I think someone on this board was suggesting white lithium grease a while back. I rebuilt mine some time ago and used something else but I have not run it other than to test it yet. I'll keep an eye on this thread and see what is recommended. I may be cleaning mine out and changing it.

George - White lithium grease is fine for a lubricant. You don't want something that is so runny that it drips on the scuttle. Also, it is normal for the motor to run hot. Finally give the windshield a treatment with Rain X and you won't use the wipers much at all. Cheers - Dave

White lithium is all I use on the motors I rebuild. I happen to like Lubriplate best, but any non-runny medium weight white lithium grease is fine.

Lew, I just googled Lubriplate White Lithium Grease and was amazed at all the presentations I found. All that did was add confusion to my selection for the correct grease you use on our TD WSW motors.
Could you please provide a number or product we should use for shopping?
Thanks.

Be very careful when re-greasing the gear box.

Greases are oils that have been treated with a metallic base. This turns them into a soap.

The problem is that there are several bases that are used to make greases and they are not compatible with one another.

If you mix greases with different bases you can get a hardened abrasive substance that will wear things out.

Since most of us have no idea what kind of grease was used before, the solution is NOT to mix greases. Clean out all the old grease before adding any new grease. This is not only the safest method it also gets rid of the previously hardened stuff that does no good.

Also note that the wiper shaft runs in oil. There is a ball plunger provided for applying the oil, which should be a light machine oil, with an oilcan.
