MG TD TF 1500 - Luggage carriers

For a TD.

Before I pull the trigger on one of the ones Moss sells are there others of a similar design I might consider? Moss's is fine, just looking around.

I'll just be needing to strap a few canvass chairs for car shows, etc., but would like to be able to carry a few bags for a longer trip too. I don't want it to obstruct the rear view if possible so the high mounted ones might not work.

This is one that looks a bit different but I can't tell how it attaches, it doesn't attach to the tire carrier on this TF as Moss's does on the TD:

Several of the members of our Club, including myself have the Moss luggage rack. if you get one you should do some mods, where the swivel is the pins can come out of their spot. I drilled a hole, used a washer and the used a pin to hold it in. If you find an original Amco. hold on to your hat when you see the price. This thing works, but you do have to watch it or luggage may be allover the road.

I've have one like that on my car since I got it in '63. You just lift the two bars on the side and it drops down. Just as easy to put up, no unscrewing and moving brackets and rescrewing in.

I had the style Moss sells on my TD. Works easily and is simple to install - no drilling.

I currently have one from Classic luggage racks on My TF. Well made. The only complaint I have is they use wing nuts at the pivots and no knobs. I replaced the wing nuts with knobs and am very happy with the unit

How does luggage on these racks affect handling?

With the weight so far back I would imagine the steering would be lighter for a start.

For those with disc wheels, the small Abingdon Spares carrier is very simple and can be removed and installed as needed. It simple slips over the three studs on the spare and is held on by the three lug nuts.

You can simply stack a couple of cases on the back and strap them on -- and remove the carrier when you arrive at your show or destination. We have used ours for over 30 years with no problems - how often do you need one anyway - and how much do you usually carry??

I had one of the Moss racks on my departed TD. Although functional I wasn't impressed with the quality of the assembly. Made in Hong Kong is stamped on each tube and the chrome was less than high quality. There is a possibility that the earlier versions were of better quality?
A gentleman was making some very nice stainless racks in the south east not long ago but I believe he is no longer doing so.

I don't believe the rack would carry enough weight to aversely the handling Ian although I never used this rack for it's intended purpose.

I have the TF version of Moss's version of the AMCO rack, hich this looks like a copy of. (Mine as bought before China, Good Chrome! LaVerne)

It requires drilling two holes in the rear valence, for the support braces, in the TD these braces are secured by the bumper bolts.
The Front braces are secured under the chrome deck valence bolts.

I think it is a good buy, far cheaper than the NLA Moss version, but shipping will make up for some of that.

It is too bad that our Florida friend is no longer making his stainless steel
folding rack, it was by far the best design I have seen.
A major improvement of the AMCO/Moss rack.

I have had my rack on my TF for over 12000 miles and also experienced
no handling problems, even when fully loaded with two peoples luggage and GOF supplies )Anybody else might have used a van or truck!

The Abingdon Tire Rack is a new one on me, it's beautifully simple, however it isn't listed in their catalogue that I could see, anyone in the UK got one for sale?

Cliff Harvey

Wow, that is one ugly aftermarket accessory.

The nice thing about the Abingdon rack is that it does not become a part of the car - as do the other racks - you simply use it when needed - and again how often is that actually?

We have found it to be very nice and you do not keep it on the car when not in use. It takes all of 3 minutes to put it on and take it off.

It may be ugly - but it works well - and it doesn't look that bad with the luggage strapped on it.

A shame they no longer seem to sell it. I will be keeping mine - ugly or not!
DLD

I agree with you DLD so, having slept on it l've decided to make one, any chance you could take a couple of close ups of the brackets for me?
Cliff Harvey

Hi Cliff - I will be happy to I will post the photos and info under a new heading - "Luggage Rack info for Cliff Harvey" OK.

The rack will only work on a disc wheel car.

I should be able to post the images in the next day or so.

Best regards
DLD

Your most kind, thanks.
