MG TD TF 1500 - Make Hinges 'Pretty'

I'm using my original hinges on my TF restoration. They have suffered some bumps and scratches over the years.

> Looking for suggestions on how to fill or reduce the bumps and scratches before paint?

Thanks,

To clarify. Are you painting the hinges? If that's the case then possibly an epoxy resin or as they are brass solder. In both cases a file and wet and dry I would have thought could certainly fill the indents and return them to a smooth finish before paint. '
JK Mazgaj

Yes, I will paint the hinges to match the body.

Thanks. Solder sounds like a good option.

Is that a granite door? First I have seen of those. :-)
Christopher Couper

Yep - Carved it from a tombstone!

Actually it's primer, filler, and overspray or guide coat from my painter. I'll return everything to him to paint when I nail the car together.

I sent the parts to him too soon. Now they have six months of dirt, scratches, and greasy hand prints that need to be addressed before final paint.

I think J B Weld would work as well. Fill and sand smooth then paint.

Thanks John,

That would be easier. I’ll try it on a spot and see how it holds up.

Why not try just plain old Bondo? It's good enough for the sheet metal.
Roy Challberg

I would try solder as it would stick a lot better. Unless you really roughed up the brass and/or put undercuts in it, Bondo or JB may pop off really easily. George

For lack of a better picture, the paint shop painted my hinges using an etching primer, then over them with an epoxy primer, then painted all the sheet metal pieces separately. That was 6 years ago and they still look like new. PJ
