MG TD TF 1500 - Making a Flasher Relay

After a good cleaning my flasher relay box works but I am not sure for how long. I have a spare base plate and casing and propose to make up the mechanism using modern, automotive relays. I have already tried them under the cover and they will fit. I attach a sketch showing how I propose to wire four relays - two single throw and two double and perhaps someone can confirm the circuit will work or better still provide a simpler solution.

The way I think it will work is:-

1)As shown everything is switched off
2)Close brake light switch current flows through relays numbered 3&4 and rear lamps light continuously
3)Flick trafficator switch to left whilst brake light closed left bank of relays change contacts allowing current from flasher unit left front/rear lamps.
4)Other switch option obvious I hope!

I have numbered the parts of the circuit 1 - 8 to show the terminals on the original relay box. The relays I used to trial fit under the original relay box cover are the ones I am using for the head lamps and cost me £1 each at the scrap yard.

Jan - A quick look at your diagram looks like it will work fine. That said, don't give up on the original relay just yet. A good cleaning of the points and an adjustment of them will probably last for another lifetime. Cheers - Dave

Jan,

My quick scan tells me your circuit will work fine. However, you may be able to simplify it a bit by using two DPDT relays thus eliminating two extra relay coil wiring and the space needed for 4 relays..

Another trick is to add another switch to supply power to both relays at once, thus giving you four way flashers.
