MG TD TF 1500 - Mallory Distributor

Lucky to get this! Rare as it's new old stock. Still in the original box. Going to set it up for the XPEG in the TF. Has the tools, springs and instructions to set the advance curve wanted.

Now THAT is a distributor, if you change your mind I can find a home for that
Nice find
Is he dual points or single-?

Duel points Willy. Have to get a gear for it but that's no a problem, there's plenty available. Been out of production for a while, but MSD now has the points, rotor, cap and replacement parts for it. PJ
PJ Jennings

Be careful...they fail and parts are unavailable.

I'm jealous
They are the duck's guts, had one in my V8 Torana years ago and it was magic
It'll go 10mph faster just opening the bonnet to look at it

I was bit by one of those (about 50 years ago!) the end play which is determined by the gear placement, is critical. The aluminum casting grows a bit longer with temperature.
J Stone

MSD, who bought out Mallory still has surplus caps, points, rotors and condensers, I'm going to get what I can from them, their not to far from me in Texas. PJ

I have to check the tappet cover, as it's been said the Mallory distributor can not be installed with the stock cover as it need more room between the two. If that's the case this project will come to a halt, as at this point I'm not changing the side cover, which means the rocker cover would have to be changed also to match. Summers coming and I want to drive the car, not tie it up for whenever. PJ

Paul I’m not near my fast road car because of the SIP orders to take pics of the installation. With the alloy cover. But I may have a tin side cover I can mount on a block on my engine stand and insert a core Mallory distributor housing I have. This would confirm that you can do it so you don’t have to upset your current tune. But I suspect you are probably correct. The vintage Mallorys for the XPAGs had a longer shaft that held the main body high above the base Let me know if you need me to fish out the parts to dummy the block.
W A Chasser

Thanks Bill, but it's no big issue to pull the stock distributor out and see just how much a problem it is for the Mallory, at the moment there's not much to do around here with everything shut down, so I have plenty of time. I need to tweak the timing anyway.
PJ Jennings

Oh no--It has to fit, it just has to,
It looks smaller diameter in the body than some older Mallories I've seen.which might help
I've got my fingers crossed for you

Sorry lads, but to fit a Mallory dizzy to a XPAG you must provide clearance on the side cover. A popular way to do this is to use one of the alloy covers. The Arnolt “Coffin style” fit well as they were designed to work with the fatter bodied Lucas mags. You can also modify the stock tin cover to suit if you are handy with body hammers.
MSD Ignition purchased Mallory a few years ago and then proceeded to wind it down as it was a direct competitor to their core business. Some parts are still available from MSD. I thought about putting together a final, large group purchase from them, but it would be expensive. A sad ending for America’s oldest name in automotive performance.
T A Peddicord

That depends on which Mallory used. The 233001-H with a 3" case will drop right in where the original came out without modifying anything. I tried mine yesterday and it fits very well. The cap just touches the crankcase vent elbow, a slight tweaking will take care of that. PJ
PJ Jennings

It fits Willy! No mods! PJ

Had to put the project on hold, since I have a new drive gear ordered, I have to wait until Moss starts doing business again to get it and it's up in the air when that will happen. No big deal, not going anywhere, self quarantined anyway. Stay safe out there, it won't be over for some time yet! PJ

Fantastic PJ
With the advance stop, does it have the coloured sleeves or is it the one with the screws and stepped adjusting wedge that you do from inside the cap---You'll enjoy fiddling with it either way-just wondering
willy
William Revit

These came in the box Willy, everything to set the advance curve preferred. Perfect! PJ

Someone mentioned to use the #22 curve adjusting spacer for the T series engines for normal driving, might have been Bill Chasser, anyone have more info on this and why the #22 spacer? Bill, was it you? PJ
PJ Jennings

Paul
Whatever you do you need to end up with a max advance of around 32, so with the 22 that means static timing of 10
Really you need to experiment with what timing you can run at that lower end (without revving it out too much) and if it turns out you can run 10 down low then the 22 would be fine but if say you can only run it at 8 or so then you need the 24
The whole thing depends on the tune of the engine and what camshaft it has

willy
William Revit

Willy, The cam in my engine is a Crane 340-0002 mild road cam. The idle is very smooth and throttle response is snappy. PJ

Bit of light reading,

Thanks Willy, Much appreciated! I didn't have the complete file, only bits and pieces copied from single posts. Good info. in there. PJ
PJ Jennings

I had someone mention to make sure the distributor advance is set up for counter clockwise rotation, it is! PJ
PJ Jennings

Well, here's where I'm at so far. Modified the side cover to rotate the breather elbow to a horizontal position for more clearance to the distributor. I have another original unmodified side cover to put it back to factory if desired. Only thing left is, I need to find another fan belt a tad longer as to clear the tach drive, I had to move the generator out a little, but doing that the gen belt is to tight. As one can see there isn't a lot of room for this setup, but it is doable. PJ

PJ Jennings

Update, installed and runs like a champ! Might have made a mistake by installing silicone wires, don't know. Starts and runs very well, so for now I'll leave them in. PJ

Wrong pic!
