MG TD TF 1500 - Map Lamps in a TF
The wiring diagram in the workshop manual shows two map lights controlled from the panel light switch. I don't appear to have these. Where do they fit and what do they look like. Cheers Jan T |

Jan, At the top of the arc on cowel (not dash) you should find little "L" brackets with a hole in them (sideways) to mount the bulb sockets. I was able to find sockets that fit at a Napa store ...but have no idea what the part number was. They simply snap in place. You should find them here: Maybe a bit more toward the center than were my arrows are. ![]() |

Jan, The fit into two loops under the padded rail, each roughly centered under the drivers and passengers side scuttle. Run your hand under the padded rail and you will find the sheet metal flange, the bulbs may or may not be in tthem. The bulb holders snap in the loops. The Panel Switch controls the )Outer notch) |

Jan, They're squirreled up and under the padded scuttle rim; and are illustrated at the bottom of page 12 in the 'Operation Manual' for the TF. There are two - one on each side and operated using the switch marked 'P' on the upper left of the instrument panel. They're not easy to see and you'll probably have to use a flashlight and a mirror to locate them; but unless a PO has removed them (most unlikely), they should be easy to put back int service, They just need a (Lucas) 787 2.2 watt bulb, or equivalent. I have searched all the boxes of bits that was my TF "as bought" but there is no sign of the lamps. Brown and Gammons and Moss don't appear to list them. Could someone please post a photo of them please. I have swopped the panel switch for the auxiliary one so the gauge lights come on with the side lamps and the "P" switch will work the map lights. I now have a two step "A" switch which controls the fog and spot lamps independently. Jan T |

Not a great picture but if you use the arrow guide above you should find this under the dash lip.

The bulb holder looks like this. When I did this car Moss sold new ones but they were crap. They would not hold a bulb as the screw stamping was defective. They may or may not be available new. These actually came from a 62 Sprite I parted out. If you have access to a salvage yard, they can be found on the dash and instruments of many of the late 50's and early 60's British cars.

Jan - LaVerne, That Bulb holder "Looks exactly" like the High Beam light in my TD Speedo. Shown as One for the TD 6 for the TF in the Moss catalog. Item 25 161-918 $5.95 SOCKET & BULB (TD uses 1) late TD - TF 1/6 Could they be the same thing and what you are loking for? Just a thought. Rod |
Rod Jones |
Probably the same Rod. Can't say for sure 100% as my TD doesn't have the indicator. I sent some off to John C in Canada a while back. I think I kept two that came from an MGA harness. |

Thanks for the info. They are the same as the warning lamps are fitted to many 1960s British cars. I will go to a scrap yard that has a London Taxi - I know they have these sort of lamps. Jan |

Here is a pic taken by holding the camera inside the glovebox (RHD TF). Original wiring. Who let those mud wasps in there? Matthew. ![]() |
