MG TD TF 1500 - Matthews Signal Flasher

Matthew, was this type of flasher the norm for 54 and 55 TFs? My car had this type but seeing the ones with the rear tab, I'm wondering which is correct. Your car is what I judge by, so would date of manufacture make a difference or do you think it was a random decision at Abindon? The survivor car Chris displayed has the rear tab type. PJ

Sorry guys, Pic.

Paul, if you have a look at the Original MG TF site and look at the images of unrestored cars, you will see both types. Could it have been from the factory that way? Maybe. Could it be only on the CDK cars like shown above? Maybe. I believe there has been discussion on this in the past.

Yes , I tried to find some info on this in the archives. It's not critical, as which ever one I can get will do since they used both types. Like I said before, mine had one like on Matthews car and knowing what I know now, it probably came that way. Looking at the survivor TF that Chris spoke of, had the other type with the tab on the back. So I guess it was whatever was in the box at the time when they came down the line. Grin. PJ

I would like to get a flasher clip like Paul shows up above. I seem to recall seeing them listed somewhere in the past, but don't remember the vendor. Does anyone know where I can buy one of those clips?

I answered my own question. I found 3 or 4 on ebay.
Looks like a fairly universal part, for both cylindrical and square flashers.

This is a coincidence. I visited a friend last week to look at the bonnet stays he had fitted to his TF 1500. His flasher unit was attached by a clip. I attach a photo I took of the stay but if you look carefully you can see the terry clip. Could be original for late TFs.

My 2 cents worth is my 1955 TF 1500 came to me with the socket type mounted to the fire wall. I have no idea if it came from the factory that way but in the late 1970's when I was doing a 1953 TD the tab type was not available from any supplier. When the 55 goes back together I will use the tab type because its a little cleaner looking. Its really what you want, as with all things MG they used the parts they had.

FWIW: My TF had a modern type installed, however I did find a "rear tab" type wedged into a corner of my side curtain box that I believe may have the original.

Paul, I believe that my flasher was replaced at some early stage with the American flasher you see in my pic. The flasher in Frank's pic from TF 9052 shows the one I should have (note that my car and 9052 were built on the same day).

Moss is selling this flasher now, 141-750, so that's what it will get. Thanks for all the input on this. PJ

My last TF had the 'clip' holding the flasher--it was a later model TF but I figured the clip was added by a previous owner. My current TF, older, has the unit held in place with the bolt. Nothing was modified on the car when I bought it so I figured the flasher was factory. When the flasher quit working I had the problem of finding a replacement but one held with the bold and not the clip. I finally found what I needed at a local auto parts store. I was able to pry back the 'lip' on the front of the old unit, remove the inner part and replace it with the new part. It has been working fine and looks great.
Attached is a photo of the flasher and a follow-on thread shows the info on the replacement part.

Follow-on picture of the packing of the replacement flasher. As I recall the replacement was the entire flasher, with outside cover. I tossed the new cover and inserted the working part in the old housing and it works fine.
