MG TD TF 1500 - May be something is wrong with wiper

I'd opened and cleaned the wiper from old grease.

On top there is an oil nipple. But I doubt something is wrong. I pulled the nipple an could see the coil of the rotor. I can't imagine that oil should drop on the coils. Who can help with explanations?

Bela

... and an other pricture of the nipple.

Bela

P.S.

I'm satisfied with the result :-))

... but don't want to drive on a rainy day.

Bela

sorry

It is an animated GIF - but no move :-(

Try this (if your line is slow it will stop sometimes - but I guess I have two complete moves per second)

Looks good-as fadt as it should go.
Indeed driving in rain is not a great experience with those wipers, esp. at night

Thank you Mike for your feedback. The only aspect of tuning could be the decrease of voltage dip at the wiper motor connections.
Bela

Bela.

I have not tried it yet but here is my plan. My wiper motor is supplied by a two conductor cable about 22 American Wire Gauge. One is to positive and the other to chassis earth under the dash. It seems to me that the earth side can be accomplished through the windshield frame. Then I can use both conductors for the positive side doubling the conductor area. When I get around to it I will post the result if it is any improvement.

JIM. Your idea does work well. I have used that same one wire system fo over 25 years on my 1938 MG-VA-Tourer.

The oiler should not be in that position. There should be two oilers, one on the top of the case and one on the bottom. The should be positioned so as to provide lubrication to the shafts that go through the case.

Bela,
Is it the Original Wimper? Don't Looks so.
Send pic with complete viele.

The cover shows LUCAS and the wiper looks similar to those I know from pictures. There is only one nipple. For me it looks like a nipple with a pipe and the pipe has been cutted.
Bela

The rain came - and the wiper stopped :-(.

I have not only cleaned and lubricated the wiper. The old wiper blades (TF?) has been substitued with ones fitting for TD and better pressure. I guess the additional pressure has killed the motor. I'm sad not to take a measurement of the current after reinstalling.
Bela

Bela, do you need a measurement of the current for comparison ? I could do one tomorrow if you need it.
I came into torrential rain two weeks ago. Wipers were completely overwhelmed - but I guess any wiper would have been. I could only move at walking speed holding my head out of the window to see at least a little bit.
Roof was already up (lucky...), but the sidescreens were not installed, because I was expecting light rain. Of course the car and I were soaking wet by the time I had squeezed the sidescreens in.
This what Noah must have had when he built the Ark...
Despite several inches of water on the road, to my surprise there was no electrical failure. Prince of darkness stood by me in time of need.

Hi Mike,

some results (see picture) from an elderly but healthy lucas cw wiper motor will be fine - additional the dc resistance is of interest.

I will start tomorrow at noon. If you can do it that will be very helpful.

Bela

In case I need a spare. Which spares must be avoided (China garbage)?
Bela

It works again after dismantling and refurbishing the collector a little. I've measured 0,6 - 0,8 Amps but it seems to be okay.
Bela

Bela / Germany !!

In case you need a spare wiper motor On the MG experience ( Go to the for sale section and tag the T series) is a guy who has a brand new ( original Lucas ) for sale .

Good luck,

Hi Bela,

sorry, I was out yesterday. Here´s the data now:

I measure around 2 amps with the engine off (battery is on a trickle charger, so should be full) and speed is about 2 seconds/wipe.

your measurement of .7 amps seems low to me. What wipe speed do you get ?

Rgds, Mike
Mike Fritsch

Thank you Gerard - I will have a look.

Hi Mike,

yes - the current is low and doesn't increase while giving pressure by hand on the coals.

But it works and the frequence is nearly 2 strokes per second.
Bela

Hi Gerard

the only one I've seen is offered by you.

Is it sold?
Bela

Hi Bela , you are right it's me . No is not sold yet.
Gerard Hengeveld

Hi Bela,

sure about 2 strokes per second ? That sounds very fast to me...

Mike

see the gif in this thread. May be it is faster than normal because I'd turned a gear in the box ;-).

Bela

If it uses less power AND moves faster, then I should do that too. Next time I have the motor open, I will have a look.

Mike

I'm sorry not to have a picture. It was one of the first gears. Sitting together with an other gear on the same axle, it was a little bit worn. The other gear seemed to be idle. So I turned the axle and it works also. I'm not sure everything is original and I'm not sure it will last.

Bela

Thanks, Bela. If it is as simple as that, I can probably work it out when I see it
