MG TD TF 1500 - Metal kick plates for front fenders

I remember at one time there were aluminum? kick plates that were installed at the back end of each front fender, just in front of the running board. Anyone know if they are available today and if so who supplies them?

I bought aluminium protectors for VW beetle (the old one) and adapted them to my rear fenders. Should work similar for the front fenders. It's thin sheet, so easy to bend into the right shape.

Thank you Mike. Do you have an image?

I've never seen them on the front. Perhaps you saw them on the rear? They are sometimes placed there on cars that suffer stone chips from the front wheels kicking up road debris. I haven't noticed any T-Types having that issue, at least not with the stock front wings installed.

My car had them years ago, that is 38 plus years ago prior to the restoration. The filler coming out the underside of the fender clearly shows where the connecting bolts were set.

I've seen other TD's with them as well. One was in Orlando, FL a few years back.

Pictures will come on the weekend, travelling at the moment

A few years ago an MG-TFn owner that was in the USA transferred to Australia for a few years and then returned to Atlanta area. It had form fitting aluminum fender gaurds on the front lower 10' of the rear fenders, The owner had just completed a full body off restoration tsking him 3 years. He also stated that he was now afraid to drive it because it looked so good.
This was at a GOF just north of Atlanta around 1977. Memory loss leads me to think it was LAKE Arrowhead and the car was black

I'm sure this isn't what he was looking for but on the TF this area takes a beating. This aftermarket item came from down under. I looked a long time before I was able to secure a set.

I have a pair of the rear aluminum MG badged protectors like LaVerne has from Austraila where they were produced back in the day. My TF just won first at the 50th anninversary GoF NEMGTR so I have not put them on and may not. They said they were the last 2 or 3 new pairs when I bought them 3 or 4 years ago. They were expensive. I may not use them, but would have to have about $800 for the pair. Yes, I know, they are not worth that much.

Great shots of the fender guards for the rear fender. I didn't know about them. A first for me. They do look good, but not $800, of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or the depth of the beholder's wallet.

Hereīs the slightly more affordable option (16 $) I used on my rear fenders, made from a pair of Beetle rear fender guards like in the following ad (search for: "Fender Guards Rear Beetle" or similar since the ad link will be outdated at some point)

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Fender-Gravel-Guards-Rear-Aluminum-Fits-VW-Super-Beetles-1974-1979-853122-SB-/311008000483?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item48698579e3

The shape is not a direct fit, but requires careful re-shaping, but the stuff is very thin and easily formable. It can be bent behind the fender to be fixed, for the rest I used double sided tape.

Excuse the mud, but thatīs exactly why I need it...

From behind - you see it is a bit longer than the actual fender, thatīs because bending it in the horizontal direction would not have worked that easily, so it just follows the more or less straight end of the fender

Mike Fritsch

And hereīs the reason why I really need it - my front fenders are shortened and I have no running boards. Thus all the mud hits the back fenders (as evident from the first pic).

I do not know the actual shape of the normal front fenders, but could imagine itīs similarly easy to adapt the beetle guards to them.

And if you really need the 8000$ MG logo on them, maybe thereīs a way to take the medallion from a hubcap and print it through ;-)

Another option (if it is just against the accidental footstep) might be to use clear PVC adhesive foil as is typically used on hatchback cars on the the rear bumper top.

When searching, I also found magnetic foils being used (e.g. for BMW Z3) as a fender protector. That should also work as long as you only bend in one direction. They seem to come in black or brown only, though, but maybe thereīs a way to cover them with aluminum or chrome self adhesive foil.

Hope that helps - all options in the 2 digit $ range :-)

Best Regards
Mike
