MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Car # vs Engine #
I remember reading somewhere that there was a numerical constant relationship between the MG TD car number and the engine number. Do not know if this is true or not? Hopefully you can help with the following: 1. Where is the car number stamped on the frame? 2. is there a numerical constant relationship between car number and engine number? 3. Where do you go to see if you your car and engine where actually as born? Thanks for the help. |

A) No, this is not true. Engines were selected pretty much at random in bunches, and seldom - by co-incidence - do consecutive cars have consecutive engine numbers. 1) Chassis number is stamped on the vertical outside flange of the left bumper extension (dumb iron). It is often indistinctly stamped, or has been painted over or filled with dirt. Scrape! 2) No (see above) 3) I have complete production records and can tell you; the on-line site seems to be having some difficulties. If you give me the engine number I can tell you the chassis number, and vice-versa. The brass/nickeled plate on the toolbox will have numbers, but they don't always match. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

>>The brass/nickeled plate on the toolbox will have numbers, but they don't always match.<< The brass/nickeled plate on BULKHEAD NEXT TO the toolbox will have numbers, but they don't always match. |

Steve, Please don't yell at Tom. Like a lot of us he is getting along in years but he does try to be helpful. In this case he is correct, the chassis/engine plate is attached to the front left side of the tool box. At least it is on my 53TD. The plate indicating the body style is on the bulkhead/scuttle. Hi The chassis/engine plate is there but it is empty. Must have been a replica put there at some time. I did locate engine number from the block. Still searching for the car number. It is 25248. Is the vertical tube with the car number on it near the back of the fender near the door hinges or am I looking in the wrong place? Difficult to see the entire vertical tube I mentioned, from the floor but I am doing a differential gear change and new upgraded axcles next week so I will be able to get a real good look under the car if I know where to look. Thanks Joe |

Also look at image 9 under "MGTD15470 » Radiator & Grille » Assembly and Installation " on Dave Braun's wonderful site. http://www.dbraun99.com/ The "Dumb Iron" is the part extending forward from where the front axle comes through the frame. I finally found the stamping on my '53 TD and it matches the number on the plate on the tool box. Jud |

Gents - my wording was imprecise. What I meant to say is that the Guarantee plate on the vertical front of the toolbox will have stamped chassis (VIN) and engine numbers, but they will not match. Steve - thanks for catching my infelicity, and Jim - thanks for the support. As far as I can see, we're all just trying to help. Tom Lange |

The engine number is stamped in to the block, just above where the brass tag is. The tag may be blocking the stamping. Try rubbing it with a tag soaked in Kerosene. It should show up. -David |

Just a update. Tom was nice enough to send a picture of where to look on the side of the front member. For those looking in the future here is my experience. I was unable to see the entire vertical side because with the body on it blocks all but 2 " of the piece. This method would work great with the body off the frame. Hope that helps someone in the future. Found the engine number with no problem. |

Joe - Bud's photo above give you an even better idea where to look for the chassis number - it's usually well below the body tab, and often painted over. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
