MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Power!

So for my winter TD projects I am considering a generator to alternator switch and changing my original regulator to solid state to improve power performance. I would like to keep the engine compartment as original as possible. I have seen the Abingdon Spares alternator and I like the look, but is it the best? What do you guys recommend and where do I get more information on both? Who out there is selling these items?

Thanks guys,

Rich

Rich, the regulator is built into their Dynamator:
"If you are thinking of converting your Classic Car to an Alternator you can use the Dynamator and retain a totally original look. Easy to fit as it uses original Dynamo mountings.
The Dynamator also comes with its own built in regulator for easy installation. Positive Ground Dynamators will need to have the ignition warning light wired thru the supplied relay. (Additional wiring directions and diagram included)"

Your present regulator becomes superfluous. Bud

Bud, Yes I have heard that the regulator is built in. I know you are very educated on these cars where do you recommend I purchase one from? I am not sure if Dynamator is a brand or what the part is called.

Thank You,

Rich

The Dynamator is a single product sold through a number of vendors - Abingdon is one of them. There are other alternator in dynamo case products out there that cost twice as much or more, but they aren't necessarily any better. The Dynamator has proven reliable over several years in the UK.

Rich,
You might want to also try Dave Ahrent at http://www.vintagemecha-tronics.com/ for a Period looking voltage regulator,, if you want to "keep the engine compartment as original as possible."

Cheapest place to buy an alternator that looks like a dynamo is the MG Octagon Car Club.

I bought one and it fitted straight in. I had to fit the pulley from the dynamo though. I also dismantled the alternator to fit screw terminals rather than the spades they come with. The internals were of good quality. The only criticism could be the length of the screwed boss for the tachometer drive. The knurled nut on the gear box appeared to bottom out before the gear box was solid but it could be a problem with the threads in the nut.

Here are a couple of links for you to look at.

I wonder if they've managed to solve the heat problems?

Alternators create far more heat in the generation of power than do generators, hence the reason they are usually made of heat-dissipating metals with lots of cooling vents. The problem with placing alternator guts into a generator body is that there's simply not enough cooling capacity to prevent premature electronic component failure (diodes, mostly) - which has been a huge problem with these generator look-alike alternators.

True, problems of overheating were reported with some of these alternators in a dynamo case. However, the dynamator version seems to be immune to that problem - at least over here, where many have been sold. When I fitted mine, three or four years back, I changed the fan for the later MGB type, just to make sure that no such issue arose. But others haven't done so, and no problems of that kind have been reported. The MG Octagon Club sell them, and if there was an issue it would have been reported in the club bulletin.

Glad to hear it, Dave. Thanks for that.

What is the AMP output of the original dynamo's?
Also, does anyone have photos of the alternators and voltage regulator installed after conversion?
Thanks so much,

30A if I remember correctly. This is my Dynamator installed. No change to the appearance of the regulator, though it is stripped inside and fitted with a 45A fuse.

Dave,
Thanks for your reply. I was wondering how the regulator look authentic. You just leave all the wiring attached and remove the inner workings, is that correct?
thanks

You have a choice, the regulator is no longer needed as the electronics in the alternator do what is required (but better). You either leave the original regulator in place and modify the wiring to bypass it, or you fit a dummy regulator and wire it accordingly. I made my own dummy regulator by stripping out the insides of a bad one, bought off ebay, and fitting a fuse inside. Easy stuff, the wiring diagrams are widely available on line.
