MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Service Bulletin on Adjusting Tappets

Is there a service bulletin available on the correct procedure to adjust the tappets? Something with 'pictures' because I lack experience.

Also, on a 52 MG TD, should they be set at .015 hot and if still noisy go to .012?

Does the Click adjust tool offered by MOSS work on TD's?

I've never done the tappet/valve adjustment before but I'm going to and I want to know how to do it properly.

Thank you.

Here you go - John Twist does it on a TF.

Clearance depends on which cam you have. Older TD's were set at .019, newer ones at .012.

Get a copy of the NEMGT Register T-series handbook, where a complete turn-up is clearly described. You will be amazed how often you will refer to it!

I used to over-intellectualize this process. See John Twist video on youtube. He shows how simple the procedure is.

RC,
>>> set at .015 hot and if still noisy go to .012? <<<
It all depends on what you think is noisy!!!!!!
remeber the old saying,,..
"Noisey valves are Happy Valves"

Thank you gentlemen. You're the reason I greatly appreciate this site. Cheers.

Above correct, unless you have a Crane cam, available since at least the late 80s, those are .019-.020 I think, and will run horribly if set at .015. George

I use a sheet with a place for me to check-off when I adjust a valve to make sure that I set all of them and not waste time setting one that I already adjusted. The sheet lists the valves in the order to set and also lists the corresponding valve that should be fully open (pressing tightly against the push rod.)

Click on this link to download the sheet that I use, plus directions from the WSM. You gotta copy and paste the link. The download icon is a downward arrow with a line underneath.

FYI - #1 rocker is closest to the radiator. #8 is closest to the firewall.

Use three feeler gauges to confirm the gap. One that is the target setting. One that is 1-thou too small. One that is 1-thou too large.

There is a pretty wide range of rotation when the rocker to be adjusted is not moving. So if you miss the peak of movement on the corresponding valve by a few degrees, don't worry.

I hope to "someday" make a disk to fit on the hand crank that will show the position of the crank to set each rocker in order.

Lonnie, I pasted your link into a new tab but got a blank page and google wanted me to sign in. What did I do wrong?

I have a Clik-Adjust. I don't find it very useful to adjust the valves based on the "clicks." It just isn't very accurate in my experience.

I use it as a tool to loosen the nut and turn the adjusting screw and then use a feeler gauge to set the valve clearance. It certainly isn't worth the money for that purpose versus a screwdriver and a wrench.

I have a very useful set of "step" feeler gauges, where each blade is precision ground on the last 1/4" to .002 under the nominal size of the blade, so that you essentially have two sizes on each feeler blade. This makes it easy to do what Lonnie was describing, and I find them really useful for jobs like this. Not sure where you can get such a set anymore - I've had mine for over a quarter century now - but perhaps SnapOn or someone still offers them.

OK, yeah, your Snappy Man has 'em:

Proto sells them too (you can get Proto thru Grainger):

I don't use Google Drive much, so I'm no expert. Can you see the .pdf document? I have it set so that anyone who has the link can download the document. I believe that you can download it even though the "Sign In" window pops up on the right side of the screen. The download icon is at the top center of the document image.

If not, contact me by email and I'll send the file to you. Copy-paste my email address next to my name. The info is not earth shattering, but it plus other info in this thread may help.

Lest memory fails me, I got stepmfeelers at AutoZone.

Lonnie, got it. On my stupid system the download icon doesn't show up until you hover over it. Otherwise it's invisible so knowing where to hover is a bit of a challange. Thanks. Jud
