MG TD TF 1500 - MGB Distributor/MGT Question

Will an MGB distributor fit an XPAG/XPEG engine with no modifications? Is the drive dog the same? PJ

I have an MGB distributor (D45) with my original xpag drive dog. From what I remember its just secured with a pin.

PJ - Even though the body of an MGB distributor may fit once an XPAG drive gear is fitted, there is much more to it. The advance curve will be way off, so it won't run very well, and the MGB distributor has a vacuum advance feature which our cars don't use.

There is a long series of test articles in recent issues of TTT2 about using modern fuels in our old engines, and what advance curves, total advance, and distributors work. They go on at great (exhausting) length, but the final conclusions are very revealing - TTT2 is available free, on-line (thank you, John James...)

Why do you ask? Your distributor can probably be rebuilt by Jeff Schlemmer to function like new, with modern gas.

Jeff Schlemmer couldn't repair my T type distributor so sent it back to me, and instead supplied me with the D45, using the original drive dog. No vacuum connection and timed to suit my engine, it works really well.

Excellent to know, Dave; his re-vamping the advance in the dizzie and removing the vacuum unit is clearly the key.

I have a TF1500 here I'm working on with Vac advance. It's a nice feature but not really necessary. I've considered this route in the past but decided I hate adding complexity because it's one more thing to go wrong down the road. That, and it just doesn't look right to me on an XPAG.

Thanks, guys, it's not for me, it's for a friend, he has a couple B distributors and thought maybe he could use one of them as his is worn out, I tell him just to send it out and have it rebuilt. PJ
