MG TD TF 1500 - MGCC T Register online Factory Records

I’m pleased to say that an updated version of the T Type Factory Records is now available on the MGCC T Register website -

http://www.tregister.org/recall_page.php?req_page=records_home

We have fixed the ongoing problem of the records not displaying engine numbers greater than 16 characters in length and replaced the affected records.

We have re-labelled one of the fields to show consistently the Production Car No in addition to the Chassis No. For UK owners, due to the merger of the DVLA and MoT databases, the Car No is the recommended one to use for DVLA records, except where there is a discrepancy between the numbers in the Production Car No field and Chassis No field.

We have also introduced a new Notes field which we have used to show where there are discrepancies and anomalies in the original paper records, and also to display some historical notes.

It has been a manual and painstaking process and I would be pleased to receive any queries users of the database might have.

Great work David! A really good resource.

Thanks for the update David. Well done for making a valuable resource even more so.

David. I sent info to you or the club on several occasions in the past to try and correct an error in the records re TD/C-8151. The record shows this chassis being a TD when in fact it is a TD/C. Is there any way to correct the public database? Tom Lange who has the daily production logs has confirmed that the car is a TD/C.

Thanks in advance.

Bill, I’ll look into it, but it will involve a visit to Abingdon, so it will be a few days before I reply.

This seems to have been an opportunity missed. I have written before to say that I have literally hundreds of corrections, but was never told that any re-doing was underway.

For instance, I am surprised to see that the Notes still do not show production-line engine replacements, the most common note in the Production Records. So TD0329 which was originally fitted with XPAG/TD/622, was re-engined before dispatch with XPAG/TD/655. TD0399 was originally fitted with engine 789, but was re-engined on 12/1/50 with engine 715.

And cars TD10720 and 10781-4 are a few specifically listed in the Preoduction Records as HOME cars. Cars TD3361, 3363-6 are all noted as SHOW cars - surely that valuable information could and should have been included in the notes?

Unfortunately, few corrections seem to have been made - still missing from the on-line records are the engine numbers for cars TD11482 through 11514, where only question marks appear. The complete engine numbers are clearly listed in the ledgers.

And there are still transcriptional errors - TD19140, for instance, is listed on-line as having engine 10443, but it actually has engine 19443.

As most people know, I have been working on these records for the past 10 years, and am quite intimate with the details. Useful as the on-line records are, they still omit a great deal of Production Record information of use and interest to T-series owners.

I am still happy to answer any Production Record questions.

My TD3966 is registered as TD/3966 EXL but this should read TD/3966 EXR.
See attached.

Bill, your car is indeed TD/C/8151 EXLU. Looking at the records, we think that although TD/C8149 EXLU was correctly identified, the ditto marks next to the next two cars are so small and feint as to have been missed by the original transcriber, and this was compounded by the fact that they is also have a second set of ditto marks denoting the EXLU notation.

I have now corrected the records I keep offline, but it will be a few days before it is uploaded to the online database.

Jasper, we are still looking in to your query and I’ll reply again soon.

A large part of the work in updating the online factory records was to make the digital records usable and easily updatable. They remained static and actually quite hard to get at for far too long.

Hi Jasper, I have now checked and you are correct, your car is TD/3966 EXR.

I have altered the records and they should be up online shortly.

Thanks for alerting me.

David, Thanks for fixing the dropped digit, which affected my car number. May I suggest contacting Tom and correcting all records possible? The T-Register database has become the worldwide clearing house for info as far as originality of these cars around the world. This can have a great effect on value, etc. as well as documenting the actual history. As Tom has these corrections noted and is super knowledgeable about them, it would be a waste not to incorporate his vast data. George

This is an update on the work we are doing with the T Register's factory records since I last posted back in November about the update to resolve the issue of the missing 17th digit of some TD engines.

All the digital TD records have been checked against the original paper factory records and the file is almost ready to be uploaded to the T Register website. I say ‘almost’ as I planned to complete this before the end of March when I would have finished double checking 335 still suspect records (the paper records are not always 100% clear). However COVID-19 has interfered and of course I cannot travel anymore and Kimber House which I needed to visit is now closed to visitors. I am loath to post an incomplete file.

The new file contains more accurate replication of the paper records including the recording of CKD cars, and also all the notes contained in the paper records of engine changes, show cars, where inaccuracies might be, where inconsistencies occur and where changes in recording methods took place. Don’t forget that these were essentially hand written records and probably many mistakes were made in their recording and the policy has been to replicate the paper records, warts and all.

I will post the file after the 335 records have been checked but of course at the moment I cannot promise when this will be. The good news is that we have also made changes to the factory records search engine and I’m pleased to say you can now search the records by engine number as well as chassis number, so if you want to see which chassis your present engine was originally installed in, you can. Go to

http://www.mgcc.co.uk/t-register/registers/t-type-factory-production-records/

and please note the detail of the formats in which to enter your search.
