Funny they used several 60 yo+ TD's in an article about the future.

Personally, I think we're a long way away from having a computer 'correctly' decide whether it'll swerve your car into oncoming traffic to avoid killing a wayward kid on a bike. Even humans can't get that one right.

I AM in favor of a system that will take the wheel in the event the driver has fallen asleep. Just long enough to attempt to wake the driver and get the car safely to a stop. That with a breathalizer....

and WITHOUT their cell phone, I pad and all the other distraction that people are more interested in when they should be driving full time! Cheers - Dave

This is a great conversation for a group like us. Like cellular telephones, there is no doubt that autonomous cars will occur and become the norm. I predict that within 15 years or less, new cars will not require a driver.

Once these cars are on the road, and accident rates drop, insurance companies will raise the rates through the roof for those of us that still want to drive. Pretty much doing away with our hobby.

As it will be difficult, if not impossible to retrofit our cars to be autonomous, I predict that within 30 years, cars like ours will be a thing of the past and only seen in museums.

Bruce, I have an Autogyro in my garage that I'd like to sell to you.

It folds up into a suitcase for easy storage.

In the meantime, there is no way on God's green earth we will stand to have our cars obey the speed limit, drive for hours looking for a parking place in Manhattan or grind to halt while trying to figure out that the street markings and scars at a construction site really don't mean that there are 7 lanes 14 inches wide. This pipe dream is DOA for the same reason we still all have to mow the lawn. So we don't run over the garden hose.

Look how long it has taken to get flying cars. Do we really think self driving cars will become normal any time soon.

'sides, what would we do without all those road rage and Russian dash cam crash videos?

Coincidentally, I had just seen a similar story

The idea freeing up peoples' time to dine in the car and message on their smartphones is probably the worst part -if there's one thing the world doesn't need it's to give people even more time to do that...

We never seem to learn that it is not only humans who are fallible but also the equipment and systems they produce: computer programmes with glitches that don't get found until there's a failure; hacking of car security systems; and, already, cars with internet linked navigation systems being "re-programmed" by roadside hackers to disable the brakes and steering.

Only recently I overheard a serious discussion between worried owner and technician in the showroom of a very upmarket German car that its radar enabled distance assessor (designed to prevent you hitting the car in front) had applied the brakes at 70 mph in the fast lane of a busy motorway for no apparent reason: cause? Rain and muck on the sensor!!!! (And possibly a faulty sensor - enough said!)

Maybe in rich Countries with nothing more important to spend their money on we will see further development and refinements of driverless systems, but in most of the World - no chance. Have you been to West Africa lately, or Brazil, or any number of other so-called 3rd World countries? Are they still going to have driver driven cars?

Come on guys! We will still be driving cars ourselves way into the future.

They all do it. They design moon-shot concept cars with George Jetson era features. It builds excitement. I'm still waiting for windows that self tint on sunny days. It's been 25 years.

I remember back when auto driving cars were going to follow a magnetic path in the middle of the highway. As long as nobody dropped a box of magnets, it'd work like a charm. I mean, who would do that, right? Nobody would do that.
