MG TD TF 1500 - MGTF / Wolseley 4-44 gearbox interchangeable?

I have a 1954 MGTF and was advised that the internals from a Wolseley 4-44 gearbox

Are they the same as the TF?

The gearbox I have is XPAW with markings of OC4 12967 162161

Hi Les,

In my experience,I suspect the 4/44 gearbox internals are not compatible/useful for TF gearboxes. The closest you will get to the TF
internals will be a Morris 10 gearbox. The ratios are slightly different I believe. IMHO better to rebuild the correct TF box.

not certain about the internals but I think the Wolseley had a column change.

At one time I has hopeful that at least some of the 4/44 gearbox parts would be compatible with a TD/TF. Unfortunately none are with the exception of the output flange and a few of the very minor parts like the bearing guards and some spring washers.

At the Y-type website in the tech section there is an article on transmissions. In the first paragraph after the chart showing transmission gear ratio's, the text talks about swapping over the entire internals from a 4/44 transmission to a Y or T Type box. Weather they are speaking broadly, or this actually was once a common practice is not made clear.

I stand my comment that the internals of the 4/44 gearbox are not the same as a "T" or "Y" type and will not fit in the case. For starters the 4/44 cluster gear, which I have on my bench is considerably longer than that used in the "T/Y" type. I suppose you could mill out the "T/Y" gearbox case to fit (about 1/2"total) but why bother since there is no shortage of good used "T/Y" gearbox parts.

Spot on as usual Hugh.

Les is in New Zealand where there is no shortage of 4/44 gearboxes laying about, but likely not any abundance of spare T or Y boxes. Question was not if to do it, the question was could it have been done; as he was told it was done by some PO, according to someone.

Hugh says it won't fit, unless you make room for it to fit. So I guess that means it will fit, and the answer to the question Les posed is that sure, it is possible. Hugh does not advise such modifications be carried out today, and nobody is disagreeing.

A lot of highly skilled and resourceful mechanics in New Zealand present and past. They probably ground on that gearbox case and stuffed in perfectly good 4/44 internals for a fraction of the cost of having it rebuilt, or replacing it. It probably kept the car from being scrapped at a time when the cost of a proper replacement transmission would exceed the value of the whole car.
