MG TD TF 1500 - Mike & Edd at it again (OT sort of)

For those of you "Wheeler Dealer" fans (and you know if you are), Mike and Edd have a new season filmed in CA, USA and last night featured a MGA restoration. I learned quite a bit even though it was a A, not a TD. Edd designed his own rear engine oil seal and showed a CNC shop modify the engine to accommodate it. (Wonder if Edd checked Moss catalog first?).

Worth watching if you get the Velocity channel. And they "turned a tidy profit" for once.

Wonder if Edd checked the MGA Guru site?

Good work Gene! That looks exactly like what Edd did. He should have given credit.

Saw it too! Fun to watch. Now if only I could do the same on the TD for that same price! $2K for wire wheel conversion kit and the wire wheels to boot! $400 for rear seal "Fix". $5K for paint job an $1K for entire chrome redo (in L.A.!!). Sign me up!

Fun episode, nice car. Not sure a $35K car however...George

The dash was not even correct. I like their shows.....

The gauges were Stewart warner aftermarket. They do cut corners and leave a lot undone. On one of the earlier shows with a red MGB-GT they refinished the wheels but used rusty lug nuts and did not put the MG center caps on the wheels.

Sandy,
I notice that they most times do not change the rusty lug nuts.
David Honness

Hmmm...

I seem to recall that Rusty Lugnuts used to be an SCCA Class C driver, years ago, possibly running a Riley or Wolsey.

After the large number of shows that Mike and Edd have done, a lot of the work (cutting and shaping new metal, etc.) is pretty repetitive, for both them and the audience. Generally I find the shows very interesting, engaging and humerous and the next day I'm out looking for a rebuild. Thankfully, hiding my checkbook has prevented divorce.

Sometimes, like the rear seal, they go a bit overboard. I think most MG owners have learned to live with the occasional drip. I liked it better when the focus was more on what Edd was doing (like the Morgan rebuild) and less about Mike going out and futzing around helping refinish old wheels. Edd really does a good job explaining the reasons for what he is doing and the steps he takes.

I am still trying to figure out if the guy that was there to buy the car for a "buyer" was Stan Lee. Looked a lot like him.

There's also this, too, BTW...

Well, it looks like Edd and the MGguru must have connected? Would love to hear the details. I'm going to email Barney Gaylord, the guru.

For once you guys in the States are behind us in the UK. The Wheeler Dealers series set in the States was shown on UK TV at the beginning of this year and I think we are on our second run. The programme has been on TV over here for a number of years and I like the way they don't set artificial time scales. I also suspect Mike knows much more about the mechanics of cars that he lets on. His inspections appears cursory but they have never bought a car that was a disaster. The amount of work and time they spend on jobs looks honest. There was another car restoration programme shown in the UK a couple of years ago where they restored a basket case MG B in two weeks. The producers slipped up though, the car they started with was a GT and the one they "finished" was a tourer!

Jan, how does Downton Abbey end :-)

In doing a little research I was surprised to learn Edd had set a "world record" in his powered sofa at 87 MPH and other records for movable office furniture and powered toilets.

Very interesting individual!

I think he also built a batch of upside down cars for a Top Gear episode. Edd is definitely automotive genius being able to do engineering, welding, electronics, bodywork, etc., etc. The show is obviously "reality" television but very enjoyable.

Hi Time,

I have no idea but my wife certainly does! She tells me it hasn't ended and in fact the latest series has just started. You are obviously a fan and if you want I can give you my wife's email address and you can exchange fan mail whilst I fit the new hood to my TF!

Cheers

I emailed the MG guru about Edd and here is his response:

">I thought it was all very funny. I have never had any communicatoins
>with the foks from WD. A while back someone said WD was doing an
>episode on MGA, and the flick was on YouTube, so I too a quick look.
>Then they got to talking about fixing the engine rear leak, which
>peaked my curiosity. I thought maybe in 18 years someone coud have
>come up with a better design than my lashed together emergency fix.
>Much to my surprise, the bloke was walking arond with copies of my web
>pages in his hand, paying a machine shop
>$400 to make up the same conversion parts. I recon that's what happens
>when you are easy to find on the internet. It would have been nice if
>they had given credit to the source."
efh Haskell

Jan, not a fan. Just kidding around.

I enjoyed the show, but was a little taken back by the sell price. If I recall correctly, I never saw the top or side curtains. Maybe they were there, but the buyer never even asked about them. If the guy who bought it sees this post, I have a $35000 TD, a $50000 TR3, and a $20000 BMW Z3 that I would sell him for an even $100,000. Wow, what a deal.

Bruce, I just watched the new Datsun 240Z episode. The buyer is indeed Stan Lee or his twin brother on that one also!
Ed
efh Haskell

AH, correct Ed. I record these and got the shows mixed up. It was the 240 Z where I saw him.
Bruce TD4139 Cunha

Checked again. It is the Episode with the GTO that appears to have Stan Lee
