MG TD TF 1500 - Mk II Bonnet Rest Rubber

We have discussed the MK II bonnets before but looking at the parts list I see the regular bonnet cowl rubber listed at part number 91208 but the Mk II as part number 2470. Why a different part number?
Christopher Couper

Can't help you on a TD Chris, but I do know the rubber I got from B&G is so close to the original on a TF it's unreal. Even has the small taper near the edge and a 90 degree lip over the cowl so it lays flat. PJ

Odd. Only difference in the bonnets is a air cleaner manifold bulge - and you can see the hammer marks where it is formed into a normal side panel when stripped to bare metal. No reason known for a different rubber.
Dan Craig

Chris - I believe the rubber at the radiator end is Rest Rubber - Bonnet part 2470, but the cowl end is Rest Rubber - Bonnet part 91208.

Dan - I believe there are two different Mark II bonnet bulges, both original - a hammered bulge, and a welded-in bulge. Early/Late? I don't know.

Tom: If you have access to the parts book check out the MK II page. I have attached a portion of it here (page R.4 although its not labeled such), from 1958.

There are also different bonnet support hinge rods listed but I don't know what those are?

It also states the bonnet was the same for all cars until TD22613. Don't shoot the messenger :-)

Now I could be completely miss-reading the parts lists.

Christopher Couper

Yes, Chris, but the same radiator rubber 2470 is also listed at p. C.2 in the 1958 Second Edition, so it's pretty clear it goes on the rad. There are a few parts listed in the TAD/C section that are the same as the standard TD, but when replacing something as a unit the numbers are mentioned again - the bonnet rods are the same in a Mark II or standard TD.

I think the different bonnet bulges were a manufacturing thing, not a production thing - there is no reason why that difference would be mentioned if the manufacturing process changed. The part number would be the same.

Chris, just to add more confusion for you, check page L.3 which shows the same part numbers for the same supports. I'm not sure what they are either.
Jim Merz

I can't see how there is any question that all cars - standard TD and TD/C used the same parts there - radiator rubber 2470 and cowl rubber 91208. The TD/C list has a number of parts that are the same as standard TD, so not everything listed there is unique to the TD/C.

OK. I guess I missed the corresponding parts in both sections.

OK Jim. I think I cracked the nut on the Mk II Support - bonnet hinge ROD inner and outer.

As Tom stated these things come as assemblies. So you find the 81810 and 81811 in three different places in the parts list. Twice in the bonnets and once for the radiator.

And the problem is its mislabeled on the Mk II page. It should not say rod. These are just the inner and outer hood supports.
Christopher Couper

Just to throw another stone in the pool, my memory of my TDII from around 1964 when I bought the car, was that the bonnet rests were made(shaped as two triangles) of a piece of black/brown folded leather attached to the bonnet by a brass split rivet. They were not new looking. I am not claiming that they were definitely original, but does anyone's memory confirm this observation.
