MG TD TF 1500 - Modified Clutch Lever

I just bought a new front clutch lever (Moss 190-400) to replace my badly worn old one. The Moss info sheet for their adjustable linkage rod recommends drilling a new hole in the clutch lever ½ inch above the original one, as shown on the attached image. The linkage rod is then fastened to the new hole instead of the original one. The claimed result is longer pedal movement but with less pressure and smoother engagement of the clutch. Has anyone tried this? Is it worthwhile doing?

That's the old "O'Connor" mod from many years ago. Works GREAT. DO IT!

Joe - What year is your TD? If it is an early TD that originally had a cable operated clutch, you will also need to make and install a clutch pedal stop bolt to keep the clutch from over centering due to excessive pedal travel. The stop bolt will also eliminate the necessity to modify the lower portion of the clutch lever. Cheers - Dave

I second the "O'Connor" mod. It works great.

This is the info you need Joe.

It worked a treat on my TD.

Thanks for your responses. Sounds like it's worth doing, so I'll go ahead and drill the extra hole in my new lever. My car is a '53 with a rod-operated clutch. The Moss info sheet credits Mike O'Connor and has virtually the same info as does Rod's link.

On a 53 TD, the rod operated clutch was OEM and it already has the clutch pedal stop bolt in place. As such, the second part of the O'Connor modification (the part that grinds out part of the web on the end of the clutch lever) is not necessary. Cheers - Dave

I tackled the excessive play in the clutch linkages a different way by making a replacement operating rod incorporating an M6 x 1mm rose joint at each end. It works well using the original drilling, ie not the O'Connor modification.
The picture shows the forward end of my early cable operated clutch. I have subsequently purchased some higher quality bearings and rubber boots but have yet to fit them.
