MG TD TF 1500 - Moss/Cowl Rubber

Had an extensive conversation with Mike Grant, Mosses trouble shooter and customer relations expert among other things last evening and we talked about many things, main topic was the cowl rubber and why they chose it's design. They chose it because it conforms to the many inconsistencys of the different cars cowl to wood measurements and creates a better seal. Because of getting so many comments on this and the one that Brown & Gammons sells, with the 90 degree cut, Moss is in favor of offering both rubbers in the future with different part numbers to satisfy more customers wishes. The 90 degree cut does not allow much room for correcting inconsistencys in cowl to wood measurements! Also they are going to ad more PDF files to explain the use of some products better. Mike Grant, extremely nice fellow, very knowledgeable and very enjoyable to talk to. PJ

Next time you talk to him, tell him they left the jack and handle out of the catalog. They show it in the index but it isn't there and it doesn't show on their web site search unless you search in the MGA section (same jack).

I had issues with several of the parts purchased from them for the TC but passed on most of the problems to Kelvin.

Paul: Glad it worked out OK. I suggested that they might want to tone down the V cut about 50%. Right now it actually takes two people to install the cowl rubber because you really need to push it hard against the ridge to get it to stretch out with one person while the other tacks it down.

I even checked my profile from 1973 and it was the same as now so this was a legacy issue probably invented by Al Moss himself :-)

Since getting involved with this, I've done a lot of comparisons on prices between distributors here in the states and the UK. Depending how soon you need your part and seeing we don't pay VAT, the UK prices are quite nice. Cowl rubber, $32.95 Moss + shipping and $11.95 B&G + shipping! Total, B&G $28.70 with shipping, Moss $43.90 with shipping! That's just one item. PJ

Thanks for addressing this with them. I agree it has been shaped wrong for many years. I have personally seen several original cars and the original rubber is much wider and flatter in cross section. The original width gives you vastly more room to adjust the fit, contrary to what the Moss guy told you. George

Moss added an info button for the Cowl strip rubber. PJ

Paul, this is just one item of about 15 that I raised with Glen Adams, the CEO of the West Coast Division of Moss, a couple of weeks ago. He actually accepted a phone call from me all the way from OZ! How about that! Now that he is personally aware of the problems that I've experienced first hand, I got the very clear impression that he is more than willing to step in & attempt to solve any problems that we may collectively have. So... don't be shy! He would like to be made aware of the issues we have with his products. I have alerted him to the importance of this forum to "died in the wool" TD & TF owners & he has indicated a willingness to ensure Moss parts actually do what they're supposed to do. He has delegated the task of examining the archive with a view to identifing those parts that we are unhappy with. If anyone's not convinced that there are issues, just have a read of the current TD/TF threads & you will see that clearly there are problems. This is a great opportunity, not to bag Moss, but to use this resource in a positive way, with the ultimate aim of ensuring that parts do fit, do no harm & are as close as humanly possible to those that originally came with the cars. If Al Moss were still around I'm sure he would also urge all of us who care about our TD's & TF's to contribute. Cheers
