MG TD TF 1500 - Music for the TF
Summer is coming (I think)! Sometimes it's nice to have some tunes for a nice drive. I don't believe in driving with head/ear phones for obvious safety (fast) reasons. In the past I have hooked up an ipod & some portable speakers. Much hassle: DC to AC converter (to power my speakers) wires all over the place, and the biggest problem...my portable speakers are "hi-end" so worth about $500 for the pair! A bit nervous about leaving all this in the car unattended. This year I think I may have the answer! Just ordered an Oontz XL from Cambridge SoundWorks. (Just received a Oontz Curve and tried it ...but don't think it will have the volume for top down driving...so going with a larger model.) Pretty sure this will still be small enough that I can lock it in the glove box out of sight when unattended. This self-powered (rechargeable) speaker hooks up to smartphone via Bluetooth (no wires) or can connect to an ipod with a single cable. Said to last apx 10 hours on a charge. For longer trips you can hookup the Oontz to 12volt and it will run/charge your devise via usb connection. Pretty excited about this one! I should have it in a few days and will post on here how well it works. My only concern is how it might react to unshielded ignition in our cars! I do not think you should have a problem, I have a similar speaker I use for the shop and elsewhere and have not noticed any issues. Have not used it in the TF though so not positive, the sounds of an MG is all the music I need while driving. Wishing you luck on spring. Don |

I've thought about this and when the car is really roadworthy I was thinking of getting a pair of battery-powered Bluetooth speakers. One of the oddities of Bluetooth is the desire by manufacturers to move back to the monaural 50's... almost all Bluetooth speakers made are single channel. Phillips makes the shoqbox which can be paired as L/R channel speakers... If anybody knows of any other wireless speakers with real stereo separation let me know... |

Geoffrey, Agreed ...have been talking to some of the folks at CSW about that. The thing I noticed about running my Fostex monitors (off a dc/ac convertor) in the M.G. was by the time I put them in the boot, and covered them with the T-cover (to keep them out of site) most of the "separation" was lost anyhow. Cambridge is a good company so they may listen. (They have in the past). The engineer I was talking to liked the idea. "These have a USB port would be cool if you could program them from a pc for L & R!" Maybe I can convince them to go for Dolby Atmos and 128 programed channels! Would do wonders for sales! LOL |

Another L/R separatable speaker is the Beacon Audio BLAZAR - Portable Bluetooth Stereo Device |

I wear earbuds. They double as earplugs from the wind & traffic noises that cause driver fatigue. I use the mirrors, turn my head, & generally pay attention like any deaf person with a drivers license would. |

Seems to me you could rig up a wired sound system without a radio, just a small amp with an aux input and then stream Bluetooth to that with a device like the Cobra AirWave CWA BT150 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_079AIRWAVE/Cobra-AirWave-CWA-BT150.html?tp=8395. It could all be hidden (under dash, in glovebox or in the side curtain box) and just have really small speakers maybe mounted in the doors? All the music you want, but no radio... Heck, I have a tiny little Sony Bluetooth MW600 I use for biking which takes the Bluetooth signal from my phone and powers my earbuds. It's the size of an AA battery... bet that could drive a small car amplifier by itself with the right cables! |

In fact, I should have thought of this before but you can now buy Bluetooth enable amps such as the Kicker 2-Channel Bluetooth Portable Amplifier 40PXIBT502. No radio interface needed. |

How can you hear anything in a T series? I put an expensive system in the wifes MGB with all the bells and whistles and it's worthless while driving at speed! I think it's only been used half a dozen times, or should I say, attempted to use! Total waste of money! If I had known this before, I would have left the original AM radio in it! PJ |
