MG TD TF 1500 - My original TF diff.

The original TF diff. from my car will soon be re-united with the car. It sat for 47 years under the house of the previous owners. It still has the TF stencil on it.
I couldn't find out why it was changed, the diff. in it is 4:1 ratio, 10" drums, and 7/8 axles, almost like on TF diff. on steroids! I hope the splined hubs are the same, the axle thread and nut appear to be the same, the original diff. appears in excellent condition.

Perhaps it is the 4.555 to 1 or even the 4.875 which was the original TF diff ratio? Cheers

There were three(3) ratios offered for the original TF diffs. However, most it seems were fitted with 4.875. The choices were 4.55,4.875,and 5.125(mainly TDs and Wolseley 4/44s.)

Don,what a great find after all these years. Fantastic. I really liked seeing the 'TF' logo printed on the diff body. On the current TF1250,
I revamped the 'TF' some years ago.

Glad you were finally able to get the diff home Don.

Cheers,

Mine came with a 4.8, but I had it changed to a 4.1 and it worked out great. 1st gear is now usable. PJ

I recently fitted a 3.9 to my '55 TF 1500. It works for me as I live in the flat lands of Florida. The 1500 has enough power to accelerate up small inclines in fourth gear but take up from signals is a little slow as it winds up. I suspect that a 4.3 would have been my optimum ratio for relatively flat terrain.

This is the drawback with fitting such a diff ratio as 3.9:1 unfortunately. Better to fit a 5 speed gearbox (top ratio 0.82:1 on a type 9) and have a fairly std diff of 4.55:1. This gives the best of all worlds as the first four gears remain as std and 5th gives a high top gear for cruising.
