MG TD TF 1500 - My Smith Heater

After an extensive cleaning, painting and the acquisition of newly found original door pulls, the heater is done. Because of the Black interior, it also is Black wrinkle finish. I believe it was on a shelf for many years with very little use, as it's mechanical condition was in excellent working order. 2 pics. PJ

I'm new to the T series. Maybe a bit of a description as to what these heaters are and how they work?

Stuart, they are a cylindrical heater core with a fan in the centre which draws air in from the sides of the core and sends it out the front doors. Some, like the one shown, also have a take-off on the top where a separate hose junction can be connected for defrosting. They usually hang vertically (doors facing front) but on some cars they were located horizontally (doors facing down). These Smiths heaters were fitted to a great many cars in the 50's and 60's.

Paul, does the inside of your heater look like the attached picture? I was given this one today and I think the heater casing is incorrect.

That's interesting. Electric or plumbed off of the cooling system?

Plumbed, Stuart, similarly to most heaters. there's no valve on them, however, so they rely on a remote water valve, usually on the motor.

TW, Yes it looks just like yours with the exception, my core is not as tall. They made them in various thicknesses for different cars. Some made for the Triumphs were thicker and they mounted in the horizontal position with the doors facing down. Yours looks like it is from a sedan where more heating capacity was needed. Believe it or not, you can still get new cores for them. Pricey, but at least their still available from a company in the UK.
I'm having a problem figuring out how these were mounted in the T series. Be nice if someone has a drawling or photo of the bracket assembly. PJ

Thanks Paul. My problem is that the case for the heater is not the correct one. No big loss since I was given the heater. But I imagine the proper heater box is more difficult to come by than the core.
