MG TD TF 1500 - My TF Paint
Making a little progress. Miles to go, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel finally. Some buffing compound still in the groves, but that will be an easy fix. The more I look at it, the better I like the color. PJ![]() |

Paul, Your color is excellent! I especially like the depth of the paint, shade variations as lighting varies, and the mirror effects. Very will done. What type of paint is it and what pad and compound did you use while buffing? Charlie |
Charlie Adams |
Charlie, I can't take credit for the paint job or buffing, it was all done in a paint shop by a fella who does nothing but custom cars. He is doing my car as a favor in between other jobs. I offered to clean the buffing compound out of the groves, just so I could get some of the sheet metal home and start putting this thing together. The fenders are in the paint booth now. Paint brand, not sure, I can find out. But it costs almost $900.00 a gallon! It has Pearl in it and 5 colors in the mix. Crazy, yeah I know, but I loved the color and went for it. Jaguar Regency Red. Only because I'm building this car for me, I'll probably have more in it than it'll be worth dollar wise, but what the heck, might as well spend it, you can't take it with you! PJ |

I'll tell you what, I never saw a TF without the front wings on, but I love it! Add some cycle fenders and it makes a very 'hot rod' looking car, what with the raked front radiator shell and exposed front suspension... really cool! |
Kevin McLemore |
I think it looks great in that colour. The panel fit around the radiator shell looks excellent too. I just couldn't get mine to fit like that. Don't forget the short pieces of beading between the bonnet sides and the radiator shell at the front - easier to fit now. Dave h |

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Been a long haul and have a ways to go yet, but eventually it'll get done. Finish wiring the dash next and then upholstery. PJ |

This is a stunning colour - and paint job. Congratulations! Please keep on posting pics of this beauty; Jan 54 TF 1500 |

Looks great Paul. Jaguar Red is the colour my parents painted our TF 50 years ago and it looked very similar to yours. Keep up the good work. Darryl

Looking really nice, Paul. |

Very rich colour Paul, I admire it. |

Looks great! |

Kevin, Here's the Jimmy Williams special TF with motor cycle fenders on it. No, I wouldn't do this, but it has been done in the past. PJ![]() |
Paul S Jennings |
Very nice, Paul, but you're right, I wouldn't do that either... bit too flashy for me. But with that simple red paint scheme on your car, some matching cycle fenders up front and perhaps some "Moon" hubcaps on disc wheels... it would scream "50's Rod" bigtime. |

Another, So far, I found this to be the biggest pain to get mounted without scratching anything. ![]() |
Paul S Jennings |
Paul, will you have that car roadworthy by May 9? If so, consider bringing it to the 2015 Morelli Grand Euro Car Show in OKC. We had almost 80 cars last year.....getting bigger and better every year. |
Frank Bice |
Paul To reduce the possibility of scratching panels during fit up totally mask the surfaces using good quality tape manufactured for the purpose. What ever you do not leave the tape on longer than it is necessary to complete assembly otherwise you will create a monumental stuff up especially if the tape got wet. If you have to drill a hole in a panel masking the area is the way the pros do it. |
G Evans |
Frank, believe me, I'm trying to get it done. I work on it a little every day. I have chrome at the chromers I can't get for another 3 weeks, if I'm lucky, bits and pieces on back order, etc, etc. Two steps forward and one step back, been that way all along. I've been beating on this thing for 5 years now and I can finely see a light at the end of the tunnel. PJ |

Paul I did a trial mounting of my petrol tank primed but pre paint and found it incredibly tight. It wouldn't fit with the new rubber pads and even without trying to get the straps attached was very difficult. Do you have any tips. Thanks Darryl |
D Lamb |
Darryl, First, get a helper! I laid a double thickness heavy blanket over the tire carrier and set the tank down until it mainly rested on the blanket. Very carefully slid the strap bottoms under the tank, put the nuts on about three or four threads, after putting the strap rubbers in place, one at a time I pulled the strap up just enough to get a bolt started in the upper chrome piece and move to the other side while my helper held the tank level. The lower thick rubbers can be slid under the tank and in position before tightening up the straps. Naturally variations to this way of doing the job must be to your liking. Again, a helper is a necessity and shouldn't be without. My wife is my helper! Wouldn't know what to do without her. Grin. PJ |

Paul, That looks like the color I put on my '34 last year. I painted it myself, and yep.... the lighter color is about $900.00/gallon. I used Dupont Hot Hues, Razzling Red on the bottom. You're going to love that in the sun!!!! See pic. ![]() |

Paul, Absolutely Stunning! Bill TD24570 |

Thanks Paul I have a feeling the tub since being rebuilt is slightly larger at the rear and this could be causing me some problems. Will try to involve the other half if she's up for it! |
D Lamb |
Started putting the fenders on and found I only ordered enough bolts for one side, how dumb is that! Have to order more from AS today. As I said before, two steps forward and one step back. PJ![]() |
Paul S Jennings |
Oh, Don't know if I said this before, but the paint scheme is a close copy of a friends Auburn Speedster, only I used Jaguar paint. I even though of having the fenders pin striped the same. PJ![]() |
