MG TD TF 1500 - Mysterious TD Bracket
I am cleaning up a bit since most of the restoration is done. I am trying to recover some bench space. There are parts to a milling machine sitting on it that I want to put underneath. I decided to throw away, with a lot of misgiving, the old upholstery pieces I have been saving for about 46 or 47 years. I found a piece I do not recognize with a bracket that I have no knowledge of. I am attaching a picture of it. Perhaps some one can help? the only thing I can think of is it is part of an under the dash cover? The bracket was held by a pair of FH machine screws. They look to be 2BA. They were threaded into a wood block. The wood block did not have insets. Just the screws threaded into the wood. The wood does look to be Ash. (Although Oak is a possibility, their grains are similar, but I dont see the corrosion I would expect from Oak.) Did I miss something? Jim B. ![]() |

Maybe a bracket to secure the panel under the dash to the wood just behind the firewall on each side? |

Jim, That is exactly what it is. That is the bracket design that I was missing when making my underdash. How I can make a couple to properly secure my underdash. ... CR |

Jim. I can't help with the mystery but your comment about throwing original stuff away prompted the following, which I'd often thought about. Original T Type stuff is an incredibly valuable resource & I wish the larger M.G. Clubs would recognize this & gather these items together for the use of the next generation of restorers. One thing is for certain & that is our cars will outlive us all, perhaps even by centuries! Sure space is always a problem but it's not an insurmountable one. I've borrowed & lent original floorboards front & rear, front 1/4 panels, side curtain box door pillars, side curtain box door & top, dashboard, sub dash, side curtain frames, door framing timber & examined dozens of defunct original parts to determine what the AM part SHOULD look like. These original items still have a valuable role to play long after their days of use in our cars are over. The first step is to find a club with premises or the desire to acquire some. (Unfortunately this is a poisonous issue with the M.G. Car Club of Sydney, one of the two M.G. organizations I belong to which has over 750 members, more than $300,000 in the bank, no home & no desire to find one!) With the original one owners now moving on at an accelerated pace, a lot of valuable & unrecognized stuff is finding its way to dumps all over the world. I've lived in an inner city cottage without a garage or any room to store a car for almost 40 years & have managed to hang on to my TD & lots of original parts. My wish for the new year is to find a place for these & items like them for the benefit of the TD/TF owners who haven't even been born yet. But, I guess I'm dreaming.. Apologies for bending your thread Jim. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

CR I can make up a drawing from the one I have. I will include the wood block. If you feel you do not have the skill to drill a few holes and make a bend I could fabricate a pair. However to do so I would need to order some material. These are formed out of 1/16 material. I believe the closest I have is about 0.050" or more likely B&S #18. It appears I will need one myself if they come in pairs. Perhaps you can better describe where thy go. Peter, you convinced me not to throw everything away. I have taken pictures of everything. I will keep one side of the uphlstery and put it in my little garden shed. It is out of the weather but not heated. Jim B. |

OK CR. If I missed anything let me know? If you want the wood blocks, let me know? Note that the counter sunk holes are not in line. The holes in the wood block are in line. This would tilt the bracket just a bit. Is it on purpose or just manufacturing tolerance? Jim B. ![]() |

Jim B, here is a copy of an under dash shield that someone here on the BBS furnished when he made a two piece part (Dave or Bruce?). The point is that the brackets attach to angled short pieces of wood on each side. The brackets have to attach to the wood between the firewall and the body so that accounts for the dissimilar hole pattern. The two piece panel is still on my "been gonna do" list.

If the offset purposful then there would be a left and right hand version. Jim B |

Jim, That is my underdash. Jim B. The drawing is great, just what I need to finish. Just an update on the underdash... the two sides that go around the tool box area are too long and I have to shorten them. Unfortunately, I have to rebuild the engine again after loosing the lifters and cam. So that finishing touch will have to be on hold. ...CR |

Way to go Jim B! Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
