MG TD TF 1500 - Need a couple of bolts for my TF carburetor
Seems like I broke or lost just about everything that I touched in the last couple of weeks. I think an "idiot cloud" sat on my head. So I'm asking if anyone can help me replace two lost bolts ... > Tall head bolt for front mounting hole on each of the air cleaners on my TF-1500. Need one. 1/4W Head = 0.434" tall Overall = 1.254" top to bottom Shaft with threads = 0.820" Shoulder = 0.200 Name your price. Please respond to my email. Yes, I know that I could replace it with a cap screw or a standard 1/4W bolt, but I prefer an original. Thanks, Lonnie TF 7211 Orlando, FL ![]() |

Can you also help me replace a machine screw ... > Brass cheese head slotted machine screw that attaches suction chamber to carb body. Need one. Slotted Head = 0.152" tall Overall = 0.751 top to bottom Shaft = .599" I have a shorter one, with a shorter head that fits, but is not like the originals - Name your price on this one, too. Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 ![]() |

Lonnie - Are you sure that the you are looking for is Whitworth (course thread), or is it British Standard Fine. Being as it is involved with the carburetor, I suppose it could be either. The brass screw for the suction chamber to carb body is definitely 1/8 Whitworth. Your best bet to find one of those is to contact Joe Curto at: JoeCurto@aol.com or call him at: 718-762-7878 You could also ask him about the other bolt you are looking for. Cheers - Dave |

Hi Dave - You're right ... the tall head slotted bolt is 5/16 BSF. It's pretty obvious that I still am in a fog about Whitworth, BSF, and BA bolts. Do you know where can I buy a Whitworth, BSF, and BA bolt/nut thread gauge? I'll go to a club member and long-time T-series builder this week to see he has the bolts. If not, I'll call Joe C. I'm bummed about the tall head slotted bolt. Difficult to install in a TF air cleaner, but it has survived for 60 years, then an idiot (me) loses it. BTW - it's steel, perhaps grade 5. The lighting makes it look like bronze in the photo. >> Still looking for anyone who may have either bolt. Name your price. Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

Lonnie, Get a copy of "The T Series Handbook" on CD from the NEMGTR or Brit Books. It has the best article and explanation about Whitworth/BSF/BA, etc. bolts/nuts/threads. Keep looking for the tall bolt, pretty much unobtainable. George |

The MG gods must have taken pity on my plight. As a last ditch desperate move, I returned to the busy four-lane city street a couple of miles from my house where I may have lost the "unobtainable" tall-head bolt for my air cleaner a couple of days ago. I parked the MG and started walking and looking in curb and gutter. After a rain and probably a pass by the street sweeper ... THERE IT WAS! I found my bolt in the gutter. A little flash rust, but none the worse for the adventure. I'm gonna buy a lottery ticket while I on the lucky roll. Lottery odds are better than the odds of finding the bolt. I am still looking for a brass screw for the suction chamber on one of my TF carbs. Lonnie TF7211 |

Lonnie - sometimes the MG gods do smile on us. The day my TD was delivered I took a friend out for a spin. About a mile from the house while approaching a stop sign between a cow pasture and a riding stable the clutch pedal dropped to the floor. A quick peek underneath revealed that the nut at the end of the clutch rod was missing. We walked back up the road about 100 yards and found not only the nut but also a lost or discarded 7/16 nut driver to put it back on with. I pretty well figure that used up all the luck I'm entitled to. Jud |

I have a TD I also have those "Tall Headed" bolts. Where do they go an a TD. Jim B. |

Jim, The tall headed bolts are used on the front and rear of the sump. They are 8x1.0 mm thread. George |

Lonnie - Most BSW, BSF and BA fasteners can be obtained from British Tools and Fasteners at http://www.britishfasteners.com/ Cheers - Dave |

Lonnie, Is this the screw you are looking for - number 40 in the picture? If so, Moss has them, part number 370-285. 1-1/4" carbs use 4, 1-1/2" carbs use 6. I bought one for one of my carbs and it looks just like the originals. Joe ![]() |

Thanks Joe. Yep, that's the screw. I saw them on line at Moss. Thanks for letting me know that they are good reproductions. I'll buy when I make my next order. Lonnie TF7211 |

Forgot to mention that the screws for the carburetor suction chambers are 1/8 Whitworth (one of the few actual Whitworth bolts or screws found on the car. Cheers - Dave |

FWIW 1/8 Whitworth dimensions are 0.125 diameter by 40TPI with a 55 degree V. UNC #5 is 0.125 by 40 TPI with a 60 degree V. I found some other 1/8 Withworth screws under the dash somewhere and replaced them with 5-40 screws. They fit fine. The ones I replaced were Pan Head. Jim B. |
