MG TD TF 1500 - need a new Td block / horizontal oilfilter
The Story why I need one . I have a engine that I want to rebuild , so it was send to the machine shop to have it thermo cleaned and re-bored . In the meantime I bought a almost new crankshaft , lifters , camshaft ,Bearings , gears, studs nuts and bolts and what have you ( small fortune ). Block came to me with two new liners and the other cylinders matched . I fitted the crank and mounted the bearing caps , adjusted axial play and so on . Yes .. plastigaged all play. Perfect so far. I then had to postpone the job due to some medical issues. When back at the job I could not remember if I torqued the main bearing stud's . As I make note's during the day from the job at hand ( habbit from the aircraft industry ) I could not find.. I did . So re-torqued them and ?????? Crank turned fine . I turned away to put my tools away a bang of some sort occurred coming from the block. DISSASTER has happened . A piece from the block webbing / next to the bearing saddle broke away. I have asked around also with some other MG Gent's with absolute knowledge on the engine overhaul business and they confirmed " never seen before " And as a advice to me they adviced don't try to have welded " it will not hold . I would have loved to post a picture but camera got stolen from my car this morning. ( Sorry Tom ) Maybe you guy's now understand this ad ................ I need a bare block for not to much money. Some one ???? Thanks for your time, Gerard ( hengeveld.gerard@gmail.com |

Gerard - I feel your pain. I heard a big bang and the cabin filled with smoke at 4200 RPM on I5 in Olympia Washington and the traffic behind me parted like the Red Sea at Noah's command. I had a pinch bolt on number 4 piston brake and scattered the engine all over I5. At that point, I got to know that big sinking feeling that I am sure you felt at the time. Got a new block and had the car back on the road in less than a year. Cheers - Dave |

Hi Gerard, I have recovered a block that was missing the entire flange that bolts to the bell housing. If you cannot locate another block, get in touch with me. George |

Gerard, You're not alone. I rebuilt my TD engine and carelessly installed the centre main bearing block backwards, and torqued it down. Couldn't understand why it was so hard to turn (by hand) but completed assembly and installed it. Ran fine for a couple of days, then while at low speed, I too heard that unforgettable 'bang' and the revs dropped to zero! Turned out to have at least a bit of benefit. The original cranks were cast nodular iron, and known to break. So I bought a new crank ($126) which were now in steel, and that went with the car when I sold it. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Dear Friends I was helped with a other block by a very nice person . so that's solved. As stated before my camera was stolen with the memory card and have not bought another one yet. Thanks for the support ( also the moral support on this mishap) Best regards to all of you, Gerard |
