MG TD TF 1500 - Need good TD2 block 14948-24489

Found out I have the wrong block for my TD/c build. The block I have has the internal pinch bolt for the distributor. What I need is a block that would have the integrated oil filter on the pump but has the external early style distributor clamp. XPAG /TD2/ 14948-24488. The closer to 17292 the better

Hi Bill,

Your block is not "wrong". It might be non-original. Right and wrong are in the eye of the beholder. So many of us modify our cars with later/special cams, exhaust systems, valve sizes, compression ratios, superchargers etc. ... and we (mostly) think it is OK.

If Cecil Kimber stuck to original we wouldn't have MGs .... Didn't MG begin with him modifying an original Morris to suit the purpose? the book "Maintaining the Breed", by John Thornley, is all about the FACTORY modifying cars to suit the circumstances.

Just thought I would get philosophical, instead of technical, for a change!

Are you sure your block is not original? Many years ago I had a group of TF owners from another state, chasing blocks with the MG casting because they all thought their blocks (without the MG casting) were from Wolseley 4/44s!

Hi Bob. Your certainly correct about modifications over the years. My my first TD is a good example with its original engine heavily modified for fast road.

My TD/c didn't have an engine when I purchased it a couple of weeks ago. The original engine was XPAG/TD3/17292.
According to my MK II specialist this engine would in essence be a XPAG/TD2 block wth the replacement cartridge oil filter and the early distributor clamp. I'm trying to come up with a block that would be visually correct. An early XPAG/TD or TD2 block will have the holes for mounting the throw away oil filter mounting strap and supply hole for the filter oil line to block. Plugging those holes and running the later pump wouldn't look right. And the later XPAG/TD2s have the pinch bolt for the distributor rather than the early style external clamp. Though I could use my engine out of the donor car (which is a replacement engine in its chassis) it would be visually incorrect even to a novice enthusiast.

My donor engine is at the machine shop now and will get used if I don't come up with a block better suited for the restoration. I'm
Simply trying to get it right the first time. Ideally, I'd like to find the original XPAG/TD3/ 17292 and reunite the two.

Cheers

Hi Bill,

Yes, I agree the best outcome is to find the original motor. Good luck with that.

I am constantly learning from these threads. As most of my XPAG experience is with TCs (and a bit of Y-Type), I was unaware that the oil filter and distributor clamp changed at different times.

Bill - from what you describe as your goal, I don't think you really want to consider the early TD block as is would be suited to the smaller clutch of the early TDs.

on ebay, contact assetauctionservices. I have been working with him on a block. He is in Texas. he has a block in the range you are looking for 19048. He offered it, n oil pan and head to me for $500 - shipping was too expensive for me.
