MG TD TF 1500 - Need help stabilizer link
Hi guys In my rebuild, I took off the engine stabilizer link to renew the rubbers. I found that the right hand threaded screw (near engine) is bent. (I was going to post a photo, but it went beyond my expertise). Does any one of you have a spare link in your parts box? At the very least, I need the right hand thread screw. I have the rest of it. AS lists the parts seperately, but they are "out". My gress is that it has been bent for years. It is the portion hidden by the water pump and pulley. If anyone can help, let me know your particulars and I'll be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance Tom '54 TF |

Which part is bent? The end that goes into the large threaded hex spacer or the end that has the rubber grommets on it? If the latter you can probably thread some nuts on and then 'coax' it back into shape with a hammer and anvil. |

First off you will need to remove it from the large spacing nut. You may need to clamp the free end in a vice and back off the lock nut. Then you can use a wrench to remove the spacer. I think if you have a good sized vice you can tap it multiple times into a decent shape. Don't try to do it all in one hit. Also you will need to secure it in the vice where its bent so you don't put another bend into it. Also you may find that you have to roll it around a bit as you go. |

The lock and spacer nuts are all loose. That is not a problem. I decided AGAINST trying to bend it back, as this unit takes a lot of torque. I hate to weaken it. Want to try to find a replacement. What to you'all think? Bend it back, or replace??? Tom |

Tom, I would thing that you can bend it back,,, as long as you can still thread a nut on it,, The only "torque" on the rod is what you put on it as you are turning the nut,,The only forces on the rod are tension and compression to hold the engine from rocking. Use wooden blocks between it and the vice jaws to protect the threads. SPW |

Place the stabilizer in a vice as Steve stated above. Take a closed end box wrench (9/16" or larger) and placed it over the bent end, using the box wrench as a lever, carefully bend the rod until it is straight again. |

Tom, in order to preserve the threads on this kind of a problem, I use two wood paint sticks on either side of the bent part. Then clamp this in your vice to straighten. The wood takes the damage but not the threads. Steve and I are on the same wavelength. |

Tom, When helping a friend collect a 53 TD in pieces I had the same problem. Be very careful. The threaded rod broke with very little pressure. The break occurred at the end of the right hand thread. Hope yours was from a better batch of steel. Jim Haskins 1953 TD |

George, I've run into that. I've responded to a thread late in the evening and then looked at the thread in the morning and discovered that my response wasn't there at all. Was wondering if I was pushing all of the buttons. Bud |

Tom, I'm sorry to report that the spare stabilizer rod that I have was cast into my spares bin for a reason. The threads are shot and completely unusable. Kirk |
