MG TD TF 1500 - Need steering pinion flange
I was working today to replace my steering pinion flange rubber bushings. Once I removed the "column to flange" bolts, I saw that the PO had drilled out the flange threads. Anyone out there have a spare steering pinion flange (Moss # 262-070) that has its threads intact? Question, if I cannot find one. I have been driving this car softly (1500 miles/yr) with no problem. The castellated nuts were intact with split pins in the keep them there. What degree of danger have I been driving in?? Tom '54 TF |

Hi Tom, I don't think you are in any trouble with the steering as it is. I would make sure that the bolts you are using to make the connection, are a close fit with the holes. The castellated nuts would be necessary for safety. George |

Tom, Not sure if it helps - but both my TD's did & do not have threaded holes in the steering flange. The three bolts are shouldered to fit the tapered rubber grommets that insert into the shaft clover flange. Once the bolts pass through the steering flange the nuts on the end are secured with spit pins. Moss will also sell you self locking nuts as a replacement to the original castellated nuts. Your choice. Me? I stuck with the castellated nuts and split pins that were there. Rod. |

My threads are gone also. Personally, I don't know why they were put on such a thin flange in the first place. I put in new shoulder bolts, new rubbers and castellated nuts. Pull the nuts up tight enough to seat the shoulder up against the flange, slide in a split pin and forget about them. Mine, ![]() |

Both the TD and the TF are stripped too. Being such thin metal, if the bolts are ever loose, or slightly over tightened the threads strip. You will be fine with the castle nuts and cotter pins. David |

Thank you gents I appreciate hearing from the 4 of you. Today I will put it all back together with new rubber and new split pins. Tom '54 TF |
