MG TD TF 1500 - Need Title Help

I purchased my TD in the fall of 1966. That was in Massachusetts, It was not a title state at that time.

I moved to Florida early in 1967 and the car was registered there until 1969 when it was disassembled.
Florida was not a title state at that time either. Even worse registrations were handled by the county. That would have been Palm Beach county.

In 1970 we moved back to Massachusetts,Beverly, MA with the car in boxes.

In 71 we moved to Boxford MA with the car in boxes.
I 1976 We moved to PA. The car went into storage for a few months and then to Buckingham, PA. Again in boxes.
In 1981 We moved to Wisconsin. The Car was partially assembled, The engine was rebuilt and the chassis was rebuilt.
In 1988 we moved to NJ.
All this time I had the old registrations.
Between 1988 and today they have disappeared. I have searched and searched.
I have an oblique picture of the car with the Florida license number. I can narrow it down to 4 possibilities.

I contacted the Florida DOT and they send me to the County but the county has no one to contact.

I have spent the past month scanning old 8mm films looking for a shot of the car. I found one of my 61 Caddy limo but the TD is absent.

I have been strongly advised to stay away from the NJ DOT and I am ready to try one of the Title services.
I can do an eBay search and find several but I have no way or knowing if any are reliable.

Has anyone on the group dealt wit a title service and/or does any one have a recommendation.

Thanks

Jim B.

Jim, Do you have a registration paper from the person who you bought the car from, plus the bill of sale? If so it should be no problem. Some states charge a penalty for having the car in state for a period of time without registering it, even if it's not on the road. Oklahoma is that way. I don't know NJs regulations, but I'll bet their strict. PJ

Jim, what does NJ require to obtain a title for a car from a non-title state? I have used the service of a law firm in Nevada where I 'sold' the car to them. They, in turn, sold the car to an outfit in Alabame who then registered the car in Alabama and sold the car to me with a valid Alabama BoS and Registration. This was sufficient for the MA RMV to title the car in my name. It cost me a whole bunch of money for MA state sales tax on the car's book value! The $$$ for the lawyers was relatively cheap, about $100 as I recall. Good luck, Bud

Contact Broadway Title or Titles Unlimited. They are on the internet

PJ;
No I have nothing anymore.
The Dealer I purchased the car from is long gone. Cochran Motor sales in Wesley, MA.

The only Years missing from my income Tax files are 1966 and 1967.

Thanks Ralph, I will look them up.

I used a title co about 12 yrs ago in Pa. It was difficult but I got a title for Austin Healy. I now live in Fl and purchased my MGA in Alabama. It only had a bill of sale. That was in 06. T took me 6 years to get car ready. I was going to use title co again but the rules have changed and its harder and most states don't accept them. I went to local DMV about 2 years ago after serching through Fl forms and finding a form for titling vehicals without existing title. It took a little convincing to get them to accept it but I got my title. If you have a bill of sale and any old documents such as registrations to show you have owned it for some time. Go in person instead of trying to do it by mail it may help. I will not buy another old vehicle with out title. nGood luck

Now that I think of it I did use Broadway Title for the Healy. I think you can contact them and they will tell you if NJ accepts there BOS

Interesting. Since the car really has never been titled, you may want to check with your state to see if they have a process for vehicles that have not been titled.

I purchased a 30 year old motorcycle in Wisconsin that was used on a farm and was never titled. It took a bit, but I was able to get a new title by posting a surety bond.

I had to have a police search done to check that it was not stolen, This is done in the perchance that someone comes forward and lays claim to the vehicle.

Since you have all the numbers on your TD, it should not be an issue to have a check that it was not stolen.

The other option that is similar to what is done by the titling companies, is to "sell" the car to another TD person in a state where you can get a title with just a bill of sale. They would then "sell" it back to you with the title from that state.

Here is an article on titling a vehicle without a title http://oppositelock.kinja.com/how-to-register-a-car-without-a-title-1478115348

In NC you can get a reconstructed vehicle title. The state troopers come and assess the car, look for numbers and run them to see if anything might have come from a chop shop. Once they're happy a report is handed to you and off to DMV you go.

They can make you bond for 150% of the value for 3 years, but that's to protect you in case the engine, etc., is found to be stolen.

I built a '34 Ford hot rod from scratch last year. I had my car titled in less than one day.

At this point, titling a car made from a pile of parts is what you'll be doing. There's a process for that, I'm sure.

Contact a local chapter of the AACA and a hot rod association. You are not the only one doing this. They'll help you out.

Like I said before, I wouldn't, let's see how I can phrase this, be overly zealous on how long you've had the car in state. Cost me $330.00 because I was truthful and told DMV I had the car in state for 3 years before registering it. Expensive lesson! PJ

Mississippi will title a car IF you can show 2 Bill of Sales. I've bought a car on a Bill of Sale, sold it to my wife on a Bill or Sale, took that to the Tax Office and got a title.

Ok here is how I stand.
I contacted "Broadway Title".
They do business as Main-Ly and getnewtitles.com.

I am in a unique position. I have a Florida LLC.
My wife will sell the MG to my LLC. They will title it in Florida to my LLC at the Florida address and I get on wit it from there.

Their Fee is $895 in addition to the Florida sales tax on the sale price which must be a reasonable amount.

Wish me luck!

$895.00. What are they doing for that much money? Boy, am I in the wrong business.

I have a basket case TD but can't get an "assemblers title" until it is inspected by our Secretary of State to be road worthy. We're in no hurry.

I've picked up numerous vehicles without titles here in MI and had no problems showing receipts and getting them blessed by a police officer.

We bought a Mercedes in California with a hand scibbled reciept from an Arab that wasn't even on record as the registered owner. They had no problem collecting tax on any sort of a transaction.

Go to your DMV or whatever and give it a shot. Depending on what agent you get, it may or may not happen. A lot of times, it is just the luck of the draw on getting an agent that with you or works against you. If at first you don't succeed, go back later and try, try again.

Sometimes having the title can work against you. A police woman said the seller put his first intial in the purchaser's box by mistake and then scrathed it out. He left for Alska that same day. Secretary of State refused to accept the signed off title and she couldn't find the guy, so the car set parked!

New Title, actually the first title, is in the mail.
