MG TD TF 1500 - New Coated Exhaust Manifold
Now that my carbs are out, I'm going to put in that JetHot coated exhaust manifold I had done years ago. I know I need to have bare metal where the gaskets for the block and the exhaust flange are placed. These areas are coated also, so I'm looking for advice as to the best way to remove the coating from these areas without damaging the "flatness." Any advice appreciated. |

A machine shop that can shave heads. They put it on a table belt sander to ensure everything is perfectly flat. |

Larry, Those areas can be left Jet-Hot coated. The manifold gasket will make up for any small imperfections, especially if you use one of the RTV sealants recommended for high temps to help seal. Been there, done that. Gene |

Thanks Frank. Gene: The new exhaust flange gasket has metal outer surfaces with whatever material is used sandwiched between the metal surfaces. Still doesn't matter? |

Larry, Shouldn't matter but if you're not in a real hurry to put your engine together (can wait a week) contact Lee Jacobson (diecuts@aol.com) to buy some (one, two?). They are $10 (including shipping) and are high tech gaskets...or as Lee says, "...these are made from the ceramic, tanged steel, Viper tech and all that, and are in all of my cars, working fine. $10 each includes postage via UPS or US postal service if overseas." I'm a very satisfied user. As for the metal on metal issue...most vintage racers don't just an exhaust gasket, just the Permatex Ultra Copper maximum temperature RTV Silicone gasket maker (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Permatex-3-oz-85-g-tube-Ultra-Copper-maximum-temperature-RTV-silicone-gasket-maker/_/N-25a0?itemIdentifier=554048_0_0_) I use it but use it with a gasket. Gene: Are Lee's gaskets for both the manifold and the flange? |
L Karpman |
Larry, Not sure if he has flange gaskets as well as the manifold gaskets. You may want to ask. Gene |
Gene Gillam |
Gene: I sent Lee an email. I don't recall if I ordered an exhaust manifold gasket from LBCC or not, but in the event I did, and use it, is it still NOT necessary to remove the JetHot from the manifold surface area? And, would I also use the Permatex RTV on it? Thanks for all your info. |
L Karpman |
Larry, Use a gasket, leave the Jet-Hot and the Permatex Ultra Copper will take care of any small imperfections. Gene |
Gene Gillam |
Gene: Check your email. |

Permatex Ultra Copper, gasket, and did nothing to my JetHot manifold is what I have done on all of my cars including the TF. |

Larry, The quality of Lee's cars can be seen here: http://mgsvwcars.ning.com/forum/topics/mgsa-2333-tickford-on-the?xg_source=activity http://api.ning.com/files/8qIoio0GTJMcSCsc1lGG3V4YJKme69sWG-eMXBYBbxomerEUZqOSwLu0hyGYuAzzzYAPBUadizkPf6TedkcHmORnVPAmrvhX/IMGP2618.JPG http://api.ning.com/files/8qIoio0GTJOVWwdnWEqwZ97gDa*5n00IzxiuRyN3d2vl6gUXoBbMBO0x18RMcZn6Wn-QA6PfESujbOUWVlj7lw87D1ETKHpU/IMGP5364.JPG |

Thanks Gene & David. Wow, Lee's Tickford is gorgeous! I'm getting the manifold gasket from Lee. I sent him these two pics and he said the surfaces should seal just fine with his gasket, and the Moss gasket should work as well on the flange. Thought I'd just post the pics so others could see why I asked. ![]() |
