MG TD TF 1500 - New speedo corrector gearbox for Ford Sierra
Here’s a photo of the nearly finished prototype of my latest corrector gearbox. It is designed specifically around the Ford Type 9 five speed gearbox which we all know is becoming increasingly popular and not just for our beloved MG T models. The idea was to make it modular so it consists of four stages as I have indicated on the photo. It attaches to the Sierra gearbox using the standard Ford circlip and comes out at 110°. This reduces the bending radius of the cable as the speedo cable then runs almost parallel to the chassis. I can also adapt the angle at which the corrector stage sits. The output matches the cable supplied with the Sierra gearbox conversion kits. The bevel stage is actually an adapted cannibalized angle drive for a DIY drill. (Don’t tell anybody!). The corrector stage can be adapted (with limitations) to suit the individual needs. I hope to begin road tests in the near future and if all goes well I hope to be able to produce a small batch in spring. Regards Declan ![]() |

I recently purchased from Declan a custom built corrector box for my Sierra gearbox equipped TF. The box is no less than a piece of art, and fitted nicely on the rear side of the speedometer, with a small extension adapter to make it go clear of the clock. With my rather limited manufacturing skills I am deeply impressed by the ability to make such tiny mechancal items! regards, Jan TF 7481/XPEG 1292 |

It really is some nice machine work (and I've done a lot of machine work over the years!). I am curious, though... do you cut your own gears or use purchased components for that? If you cut your own, what do you use for the cutting? |

I bought a Type 9 to TF spedo cable from Speedy Cables. They said they can recalibrate my speedo for £40. Declan's gearbox will obviously correct both the speedometer and mileometer but I wonder if a recalibrated one will only correct the former. In the short term I am going to note when the car is travelling at 30, 40 etc using my phone app and mark the speedo glass. I have wondered if I can simply pull the needle of the instrument and reposition it in the appropriate place. Also the guy who reconditioned the gearbox said various speedo take off pinions are available. I wonder if one would simply do the correction. Jan T |

Kevin, The gears are purchased components-modulus 05 and manufactured by Modelcraft. They come with two grub screws and can be tightened up nicely onto flats on the shaft. Regards Declan |

Jan, That is exactly what I cannot understand. Speedograph offer correction gearboxes, but, as I understand it they still want to re-calibrate the speedo-for what?? Regards Declan |
