MG TD TF 1500 - New staple gun question
Ok, I can borrow a compressor, which means I can purchase a pneumatic unit. http://www.harborfreight.com/20-gauge-wide-crown-stapler-61619.html drives 1/4 to 5/8 staples, sounds pretty good, standard Arros staples. This looks to have a deep nose for use in the hidem strip; And is cheap at $22. Seeing as I cant imagine needing a professional, $150 model which I will never use again, doesn't this one make sense? I understand the caveat that all HF tools are largely junk, but for something I will use to shoot maybe 200 staples tops, it seems overkill to buy anything else... as I'm not planning to open an upholstery shop any time soon :) ![]() |

Geoffery, not all HF tools are junk for light use. I bought a 4.5 inch grinder about 10 years ago for 20 some dollars and because it was so cheap I bought another for a spare thinking it wouldn't last very long. Well I just took the other one out of the box a couple months ago. Not because the first one went bad, but just so I didn't have to keep changing grinding disks. A lot of hard hours on the first one and still going strong! If you can get them, I'd use spear head staples, not the ones with the flat end. For 22 bucks, I'd go for it. JMHO. PJ |

Thanks Paul, I think I will. My experience, however is the opposite... I probably bought the same 4.5 inch grinder for $17 on sale and it broke within a month or two! :) But maybe I'll get lucky... and I'm pretty sure it will last for 200 staples.. |

Geoffrey, If you haven't bought that HF stapler yet, DON'T! I tried it several years ago and it doesn't work...it's more for carpentry work than upholstery work. It has a safety on the tip that must be pressed down and it's hard to get between the hidem strips. I ended up buying this: http://www.amazon.com/Air-Locker-U630L-Upholstery-Stapler/dp/B002R669HI and it was perfect for the work. Picture in action to follow. |

Geoffrey, I agree with Gene. My philosophy on HF: For simple hand tools: if for one-time, short-term, or rare use: okay. For complicated (electric, air, or many parts)tools: buy something of better quality. The Air Locker staple gun works great for about $60 (Google a supplier). And they send you 40,000 staples. I don't think that's an upholstery stapler either! It's for carpentry tacks and brads. Mine has a longer "snoot". I'm not home or I would send you details, but it wasn't that expensive. And you will also need a proper upholster's staple remover. It's a hand tool with a very sharp "V" shaped end. You will need it - trust me! And several sizes upholstery stapes, not wood brads from Home Depot! Ed |

Ed, It's the Air locker Long-Nosed Upholstery Stapler Model U630-L. It shoots staples, not brads, and has been a real time saver. Tyler |

Tyler, my comment was addressed to Geoffrey Baker regarding the HF stapler (see original post above), not yours. Yours looks very similar to mine and is indeed the "right tool"! Ed |

thanks Ed, I'll probably sell it when wife is done with the crash bar, rear side and door panels. It will come with about 39,750 staples in 4 sizes. Tyler |

JFWIW, my wife bought this used Fasco pneumatic upholstry stapler off ebay a couple of years ago for a project that she was doing. It's a real workhorse and shoots staples through just about anything. Worked a treat on the hidem strip on the front rail for my hood. Jud
