MG TD TF 1500 - New Tyres on Wire wheels

Is there any value or infact reasons not to add "gaffa/gorilla" tape to the area over the spokes besides the rubber rim bands as extra protection on wire wheels? I've noticed that with the existing rim bands they have quite deep indentations in the area of the spokes.

I wouldn't use anything other than the recommended product. Try Blockley for heavy duty rim bands.

A 20 mil PVC tape is the best product. The rubber strips work but are not as secure or durable. You can use a 10 mil tape but do two wraps. You can find this type of tape in most hardware or plumbing supply stores.

Used to have this issue with racing pushbikes.
The tyres get pumped up around 180 psi+ and the rubber rim band dissapears down the spoke holes causing cherries to form on the tube then just when you don't want it to happen "BANG" %$^#@ crash ouch
Gaffer tape or plastic tape is useless under the rubber band,it just stretches, the only thing that will hold shape and not go down the hole is fibreglass reinforced tape , 2 laps around pulling it as tight as you can going round-then your rubber rim band over the top
--Fibreglass cross weave filament tape-- e.g.

Fiber tape will work, but often the glues aren't very durable and will dry out over time, allowing it to move. The same thing happens with duct tape, which is actually one of the worst things because not only does it dry out but the glue also melts when hot, and can lose adhesion when wet. Shouldn't be a problem in the short term.

PVC tape is by far the most durable, but that does not include electrical tape, which is much too thin and has a glue with far too low a melting point for road use in warm climates.

Rubber strips used on bicycle rims are indeed a poor choice, for many reasons. The ones used on cars are thicker and more durable than those on bicycles, which tends to not only be thin but also narrow so they always break at the valve stem hole. Stretchy plastic strips are better, but the best is a heavy cotton adhesive tape, especially that sold by Velox.
