MG TD TF 1500 - New Yahoo Group

I started a new Yahoo group called Volvo Engined MGs. Anyone interested in joining the group to find out more about putting a Volvo engine in a T series MG and doubling the power, go to https://groups.yahoo.com/group/VolvoenginedMGs.

gag me with a spoon! I am not a O P, but an MG should have MG parts, from a different year or model is OK!
No transmissions from other manufactures! IMO!

Charlie, when I found Lazarus he was sporting a B16. My first project was to find an XPAG. I gave the B16 away. I'd do it again. YMMV. Bud

Everyone has their own opinion. I don't share yours and apparently you guys don't share mine. My post was intended for folks who are interested in finding out some facts to help with a decision of what path to take.

Good for you Charlie and more power to your group. People should do what they want with their cars. It's that simple.

I have acquired 2 engines, 2 transmissions and 1 rear end from TD owners who have chosen to replace theirs with Volvo units. In each case, they were happy with the results, and I was delighted. I feel the Volvo makes a very nice replacement for the XPAG when necessary.

Charlie, I wish you well with your new group.

The Volvo engine was one of the engines of choice when some TD owners were faced with replacement.
Here's hoping that you get a good level of interest and participation from the Volvo engined TD owners out there.
I remember when looking for my TD four of five years ago that several of the cars that came across the screen were Volvo engined cars. They are out there.

I remember years ago, Popular Mechanics ran an article on a Chevy V8 conversion in a TD, believe it or not, it was beautifully done. Many of these cars have been converted over the years with one power train or another, Volvo being one of the favorites. Remember, these cars were just another cheap set of wheels to most people back then and when the MG engine blew up, they went to the junk yard and bought whatever would fit, some good, some not so good, Volvo being an easy transfer, let alone twice the power and nicer transmission. Americans always wanted more power! Today most of use are concerned with correctness, so much in fact that we have a tendency to look away from a car that was converted many years ago, even though it was nicely done. I'm happy that the cars are being saved and used as drivers preserving the look of yesteryear. I'm not into kit cars though. JMHO. PJ

I bought my B20 powered '53 TD in June, 2010. So far it has never let me down. Always starts and runs well. Plenty of power for a 3.9 MGB rear end. I have more new parts bought than I will likely ever get installed. Over the years I have owned lots of old British sports cars, mostly Jags. I have always had a lot more fun with a car that I could drive while it was still "a work in progress." This is not everyone's cup of tea, of course. One advantage of this particular Volvo engine is that it is the one that powers the car that holds a world record for miles driven by an original owner, somewhat in excess of a million. The engines must be very durable, as I am not sure that mine has ever had air cleaners on the carbs.

Best of luck to Charlie's new group; I may be talking to you about installing a T-9 five speed.

Regards,

Bobby Loughridge
