MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Canister color

What was the original color for the oil filter canister? My motor is a 1953 1250 and has the original housing for the filter insert. Lookin for pics it seems a toss between the ruby engine paint or black. Many thanks.

Gary-

Going by this-

https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_finishes.htm#engine

Oil canister - old style Orange These were throw away elements. There is a decal that went on these parts. Cast element housings were an add on.

Oil canister - newer style 1952 (Tecalemit) Part number I62451 Bronze A slightly darker color than the instrument cluster. The steering wheel center was this color.

Oil canister - newer style 1952 (Purolator) Part number I62429 Light Silver-Green Used on some later cars. Noted by the large attaching bolt and capped plate at rear of the filter. They had no identifying plate as on the Tecalemit filters, but were decorated with a decal naming the company and listing the maintenance procedures.

hope that helps

Well, that depends on if you mean what the factory did, or what the dealer did.

Here are original factory photos of the engine with the oil filter. My take is they put everything on the motor, covered the generator with a sleeve, and then painted the whole motor red.

It is possible that the second picture does represent a different color on the filter, but even in black and white, different colors show up differently.

I believe the dealer then changed out the oil filter as part of the initial servicing of the car.

My thinking on them painting the whole engine red included why in the Safety Fast Video, the front pulley of the generator appears to be engine color, not black.

Also, the oil lines and bolts all appear to be the same color.

Late-model Tecalemit oil filter on a TF color. After a lot of research, this is supposedly the original color. PJ

Thank you for great information. Bruce, where can I access the video you referenced?

Ah, the things you notice!

From the Safety Fast (1948) movie, note the Jubilee style hose clamp on the thermostat (circled), which is NOT the dual-wire type which I understood was the standard!

No chain attached to the oil filler cap either.

David Padgett

Apologies to all.

I now note that these issues (clamps and chain) have been 'done to death' on a number of previous threads.
David Padgett

No problem bringing up interesting differences David. Yes, the early TD (at least through 1950) had jubilee hose clamps.

As for the chain. I can't tell on that photo. The chain goes to the carb side on at least the early TDs.

That picture does point out another difference. Look at the thermostat housing. It is black. There is clearly a difference between the color of the upper and lower housing.

Now look at this picture of another factory photo. The upper and lower housing appears to be the same color. While the hose clamp looks to be a two wire clamp, when I enlarge the photo, it is also a jubilee.

Bruce Cunha

Here is a factory photo with the two wire hose clamp. It is hard to tell if the thermostat housing is black or red.
