MG TD TF 1500 - OIL FILLER CAP-TD

HELP
I took off my rocker cover, AND CLEANED IT AND OIL FILLER CAP. And now cap rattles through various rpm ranges. I'm assuming their is a washer of some type that I lost or just a lot of gunk that kept it quiet.Could somebody let me know what and where the washer goes.Or does the cap inner part have to be adjusted

Barry - Not to insult your intelligence, but when you put the filler cap back on the rocker cover, did you push down real hard on the button on the top of the cap? If not, then the cap is not locked in place and can rattle. Cheers - Dave

Mine is also loose, I always assumed it belongs that way to let off oil steam. If it rattles, it certainly isn't the only thing that does. I sure can't hear it for all the other noises

The gasket is just a simple piece of fibrous paper. Perhaps the tabs are not bent correctly to allow the cap to pull down onto the lip of the filler hole.

As Dave states if the cap is put on and snapped down firmly it should be snug against the valve cover. I don't think the gasket would really make a difference on it rattling or not.

Steve on the original caps the center "button" or knob is depressed after the cap is set into position to lock the cap and seal the opening. Same knob the chain attaches to. Regards, Tom

So it's just referring to the center "area" of the cap, and not an actual button? I've never had to do that with mine,,
I just though the chain was just attached to a center 'rivet".....

If the chain is making the noise you can always slip a piece of tubing over it to quieten it down

My original cap never sat right. On investigation not only was one of the tabs bent but the gasket was missing a section. I removed it & made another cut from the cork recycled from a replaced engine breather plate gasket. Sits & seals beautifully. Not only is the cap & chain original, without the plastic tube, it is also mounted in the correct position for an early TD. Cheers

My cap was also missing a gasket. Not knowing what was supposed to be there, I made a gasket out of some thicker brown leather. I worked it around the spring-center bit and trimmed it so that it fits snugly into the beveled edge of the cap. It works great!

I bet they would have used leather too if it was a more deluxe car. Nice idea and probably seals better and will last longer than the fiber stuff. Plus it was probably the only good way to do this. The fiber one may have been put in before it was assembled and you could not very easily get it around the spring-center like your leather one.

Ha, yeah, I probably did, Chris. But you're right, the leather was easy to stretch a bit to get around the center spring-cap without having to disassemble the whole oil cap (drill out rivet, etc.)... plus it works perfectly.
