MG TD TF 1500 - oil filter by-pass problem
I am overhauling a xpag engine ( late style ) and want to do a proper job. Also by cleaning everything to the best . Now I am at the oil-pump and so much hard crud was in there I had to take it fully apart. The by-pass valve came out after a struggle for about 2 hours . A total clog was found . Gently turning the collar down fraction by fraction, the d.... thing came apart. So far so good . But with closer examination it was found the copper housing treads are damaged . there were signs the P/O tried to get it apart and forced / screwed the housing back in to the pump housing and damaging the by-pass housing BRASS( he should have known copper /brass treads on steel need to fit very precise . To my gauges the o/d of the housing Is 20.05 MM tread size 1.0 QUESTION : or better a cry for help. Does some -one has a spare by-pass (complete ) and / or does some -one is willing to lend the the right tap and die to clean up the treads . Sorry for this lengthy tread , Gerard |

Don't bother anymore All problems solved . Thanks , Gerard |

Gerard, Still let me know if you need the part. I have spares in the shed. It is a small item so should be OK to post from Australia. Bob Schapel |

Inquiring minds want to know: How? Jud |

You probably mean "How" Gerard fixed his problem? .... but just in case you were referring to my post .... I started playing with TCs when I was 11 and racing them when I was 19, hence I have a garage full of junk (with some usefull stuff mixed in). Wolseley 4/44 engines are basically the same as the TF so I collected some for spares. They have the later oil pump system. Yours oTCagonally, Bob Schapel |

Inquiring minds ??? I'll try to describe HOW I did it. After a struggle and machining a new slot in the pressure relief unit I managed to get the thing out of the pump housing. The bras treads where rounded by dirt giving a hell lot of drag. ( easy fix after all ) I then could see how the valve looked ( didn't know what to aspect :. ball / spring ??? )I turned a small piece of copper down from the by pass-valve just to release valve spring and holder. Cleaned the crud out . The contents of the valve are : 1 spring ,1 mushroom type ball with a long stem . 2 very small rings to hold everything in place during new factory manufacture. How to get the d....d thing back in it's housing . I decided to turn a press fit small ring ( 1.4 mm x 2.5 mm ) After 3 attempts I had the right one. Putting it back together was easy and I locked it for security with a bit of solder. It cannot come loose because it bottoms in the pump housing anyway. Measured the relief pressure after the job done> 15 pounds I made some pictures but I am unable to post them on this website. If somebody who would like to see them feel free to send me a email. and I'll send them. No objections here to spread them along the board. Gerard. Bob thanks for the offer but my problem is solved. |

Wow!! I thought maybe you jsut turned a screw the other way or something. The level of skill at fixing/making parts you guys display far exceeds anything I could consider but thanks for the explanation. Hope I don't have to go there. Jud |

Jud , I'll never do a job like that again also ( I hope ) Gerard |

A bit O-T, but to Bob in South Aus. - don't suppose you have a straight but tired old TC for about $10k in your shed, looking for someone to restore?? I need a project after the Y and before I re-do the TD. Cheers! John. |

John, No. Sorry ... but will let you know if I hear of any. Bob |
