MG TD TF 1500 - Oil gallery bolts

This pic is from Dave Braun's site (thanks DAve!)

I have arrows pointing to bolts on the distributor side oil gallery. My question is, how tight should these be, and should they have washers, and should they thread in flush to the engine face?
Thanks!

Geoffrey M Baker

No washer, tight enough to prevent oil leakage.
Gene Gillam

Snug, use thread sealer.

Aren't those the cam bearing dowel bolts, drilled for safety wire?

No Bud, the cam bearing dowel bolts are above and to the rear, two of them. You can see the middle cam dowel bolt right above the center bolt that I have the arrow pointing towards; the rear dowel bolt is out of the picture.

I have no idea what the purpose of these bolts ever was, but there are four of them (the two I pointed out and another two directly below them. Perhaps they were holes left from the machining process that they just tapped to block off?
Geoffrey M Baker

They are there so you can clean the oil galleys, and were probably required for the casting process as well. Use a good sealer and they will not leak. The rear plug (on rear face of block) needs to be extra well sealed of course.
Steve Simmons

Second Steve w/ rear block plug behind the flywheel. When it leaks it pours and requires pulling engine/interior/etc. Been there too! George

I think you will find there are five of the bolts in question. There is one towards the rear also. There would be six but one has its place taken by the larger threaded hole for the oil supply pipe to the head.

During manufacture the holes would have been needed to drill the oil galleries which take oil from the main (front to rear) gallery to the three main bearings and the three camshaft bearings.
