MG TD TF 1500 - Oil gauge seals
After about 5 years, I got tired of watching the oil drip from my oil gauge connection, and bought replacement washers; one solid copper, the other a compressible one. I bought several sets, JIC. I can’t be sure that they are presently in the correct position (order). The images on the parts pages are just too unclear to provide any guidance. Can anybody advise me on the correct order, or for that matter, any improvements I can make to the system. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Gordon, if you're talking about the fitting directly at the back of the gauge, the culprit is a thin leather washer. Moss had been carrying them. See Item #146a on Moss' External Engine diagram, Part No. 435-515. Or, do you mean the ones at the banjo bolts? They are compressible copper washers OEM #AEC346. Four in total, one on each side of the banjos. Bud |

The washers at the Bamjo bolts. Is their order critical? gc |

Not likely. All four are the same part. At each location there would be a washer on the banjo bolt at each side of the banjo. Bud |

You're right. All catalogs show the same flat copper washer on each side. Below is a cut from the Anglo catalog. But Abingdon sent me kits that include the collapsible washer. Do you think that putting in a fibre washer will improve things? Gord C ![]() |

Gord. All four washers are copper. I always anneal them before installation.Just take a hand torch and with them hanging on a wire just heat them up till bright red. Some people douse them in water to cool . I think that part is not needed. just clean the black gunk off and instaall. It might pay to check the trueness of the four surfaces on the oil pipe. I use a plate of glass and fine sandpaper to level those surfaces Sandy |

If you use the collapsible washer there is no need for any fiber washers. I use them, but YMMV. Bud |

To clarify it - I use the collapsible washers, no fiber. Bud |

OK - thanks chaps. I think I've arrived at a decision. I'm going to first, clean up the joint faces, as Sandy has suggested, then install the collapsible washers. Maybe I won't have to put down newspaper any more! Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Gordon, check the condition of the hose that goes to the gauge coupling. My umpteen year old hose was the major source of oil leakage from my engine. It was oozing out of it. Bud |

Good point - tnx. gac |

Google "Earl's Dowty Seal". Those are the only washers I could get to not leak on my top banjo. They are a soft metal with an inner o-ring. George |

Gordon, keep the banjo fitting faces parallel as you clean them up with emery paper and a piece of plate glass. If they are not parallel, no matter how flat they are, they will not seal. Regards, Tom |

For the record, the correct term for these washers is 'Crush Washers'. The hottest technology - looks like a 3245-3/8" Stat-O-Seal will do the job too. My God, but these things are dreadfully expensive. From Pegasus Racing $1.59 each See:- https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=3245. I just bought 10. Does anybody know if they can be re-used? About 2 weeks ago, I bought a whole bunch of copper crush washers from Abingdon. Guess I'll just have to "archive" them. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

It purchased a whole box of various sizes. 40-50 washers (copper). They were about $5.00 from Harbor freight. sandy |

Gordon - Completely off topic ... Did you snag the image of the oil pressure banjo from an on line source? If so, what is the site? It is a good quality image. Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

Lonnie, I have just about every catalogue on T-Series parts that ever existed. Several are better than the Moss or Abingdon catalogues, like Anglo Parts, B&G, and NTG, The image comes from the all-colour and very excellent Anglo (Belgium) catalogue. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |
