MG TD TF 1500 - Oil on Carpet
Hey All, in preparing to remove the engine, I have first removed the interior. To my dismay, the tan carpet is quite (motor) oil stained. Has anyone had success removing large stains from (Moss) carpets? Thanks, Tom |

Try using Resolve in the red bottle. Spray on, let soak for a few minutes, and brush in. Then with a terry cloth, wipe up the excess and grunge. You may have to do it a few times. I won't use anything else on fabric - especially oil stained fabric. |

I have had success with an initial cleaning with mineral spirits. Carpet Cramer after mineral spirits is wiped off/evaporates....but what is the source of the oil? Regards, tom |

Where were you guys in the early 70's when I used to park my 58 Panhead in the dinning room for the winter? |

I agree with Tom P. Mineral spirits first. I always have a gallon handy fro cleaning cloths from oil-like food stains. Jim B. |

Oil on the carpet usually comes from a leaking oil line to gauge connection. Check and see if the miniscule leather washer is in place between oil line and gauge. Sandy |

When I was just about to toss a light plane carpet with a nasty oil stain - no carpet cleaner seemed to touch it, one of the guys suggested I try the same mixture we used for degreasing landing gear. We used varsol or stoddard solvent gelled with Brulin 815MX detergent. Some shops used kerosine or mineral spirits as the solvent. The mix becomes water soluble so the solvent loosens the oil and the detergent allows it to be washed off with a hose. Now, we had given up on that carpet so we had nothing to loose. The results were nothing short of amazing! All the stain was gone and the carpet was clean and bright. It also took a day hanging from a fence on the flight line to dry. I've since used that same mixture to clean lots of things that nothing else would. I wouldn't use it on anything delicate and only as a last effort. Your mileage may vary. |

I was hoping no one would ask where the oil came from. It started out a check the tranny level and refill, turned into a check and spill. The Resolve seems to have resolved the issue. Pun intended. Tom |

Now it's clear why the MG's were originally fitted with black carpet.... |

There's more hope of getting nice clean new oil out than used engine oil with all the fine soot and other contaminates suspended in it. I think I'll get some resolve to have on hand for my next oops. :-) |
