MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Pressure (again)

Hi All,

Having resolved the mystery lack of oil pressure, I am now thinking about the fact that this XPAG engine may now have a little too much pressure.
As I installed the Moss "Adjustable Oil Pressure Relief Valve", I'm thinking maybe I have it set too high.

At operating temperature it idles with 35 - 40 lbs and 55 - 60 lbs at 3,000 RPM.

Anyone else think that this may be too high?

Definitely not. Besides, the adjuster only limits the maximum pressure. Bud

Good oil pressure. No problems!

What weight oil do you have in the crank? Just curious.

If you're reading from the block not the head those sound just about right, from what I've read. Mine is taken from the head and is lower (20-30 at idle, 50 at 3000).

Many thanks to those who responded to my inquiry.
I feel more relieved now.

My TD at cold start up the oil pressure registers 70#

After warm up and cruising down the highway at 50 MPH and 3200 rpm the oil pressure is 60#

Idling after driving for ten miles or more and the outside temperature is around 85, and the engine water temp has reached 75, the oil pressure is dead on 20#

Not too high, but I wouldn't want to see it above 60 at speed. These engines care more about flow than overall pressure, so you can easily get away with the old standard of about 10PSI per 1,000 RPM. Personally I'm most comfortable with 45-50 at highway speeds, which for me is about 4,000 RPM.

There is a good reason for having a pressure relief valve. When the engine and oil are cold you can get very high pressure and deform a screw-on type filter.
It makes a real mess!
As Others have noted, as engine rpm is increased oil pressure goes up, only until the relief valve opens.
When the engine is really hot yo may never reach that point, but you are circulating a lot of oil. The tighter the bearings the higher the oil pressure, only up to the relief pressure.
