MG TD TF 1500 - Oil pressure behaviour changes with modern filter?

Here´s an oil filter adapter question:

My oil pressure (meter?) seems to behave differently since I swapped the oil filter for an adapter with a modern filter (later horizontal type).

Problem is that when I changed the adapter, the meter was not working (see other thread) so I have no real benchmark.

In the original setup, the meter was very quick to react to changes, including fast drops when going to lower rpms. When idling the engine without ignition, the meter was never really showing pressure. That only happened once the engine was firing up and running.

Now, with the modern oil filter, it seems to be fairly "sluggish", the meter takes a few seconds to move to 0 after turning off the engine where before it would just drop sharply.

On the other hand, it now shows increasing pressure even when turning the enging with the startet w/o ignition, so it seems a lot more sensitive.

The question for me is if this is doe to a different behaviour of the oil flow / relief valves with a modern filter or if this is due to the issues with the meter as mentioned in the other thread.

Did anyone observe a change in pressure buildup / relief after changing to a modern filter ?

Additional complication ;-) of course I changed the oil when I swapped the filter...

Mine works perfectly, so I don't think its generic. Which filter can are you using?

Mike I have the canister conversion on both the TD and TR3 and they work just like they normally did before the conversion. I run 20/50 weight oil. Think the TD is A Fram filter and the TR3 is a Napa filter (US Company).

Mike,

I have the late TD stock filter. No conversion. I get 10 to 15 pounds of pressure cranking with the ignition off. When running, 60 pounds cold, 45 pounds hot, and about one second drop to zero when stopping the engine. As I recall this is very much like my previous TD. yours sounds about normal to me.

A modern filter (canister) has an anti drain valve.
Oil pressure drop is only through the bearings and not back through the pump and associated valves. This worried me when I converted a couple of years ago. So it is normal.

Thanks for all the examples. So my conclusion is that the anti drain valve in the modern filter will slow down the drop in pressure a bit after engine stop, which is what I observe.
My pressure is around 60 at normal rpms and 70 at high revs, a bit more than before, but this may be due to the different oil and a relatively cool day with cooling temp never above 75C.
