MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Pump Assembly
My TD is an early model but has the oil pump separate from the vertical filter. I see in the catalog that there is a gasket between the pump and the block. Is there anything that goes on the surface between the two halves of the pump itself? Thank, Mort ![]() |

Mort, this has been brought up in a number of threads in the past. There is no gasket between the surfaces of the pump itself. In the WSM, Section A.4, the last sentence reads, "No gasket is fitted between the pump body and the pump cover". Bud |

Hello Mort. Also to add to what Bud said, it is suppose to be metal to metal no sealant. The spec. on the clearance is .0015 to .003, if you add sealant you will add at least a thou, which will cause loser pressure. Butch |

If it is apart check the cover surface, as the gears tend to wear grooves into the cover. It needs to be perfectly flat - a surface grinder is best, but others try to do it on a sheet of glass with emery paper. Keep it flat! Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Mort, Horst Schach suggested "Put a light coating of high tack gasket spray on the gasket that goes between the pump and the block. The cap to the pump has no gasket but should be coated with the same gasket spray. Also use new copper washers under the head of the bolts." He also recommends using new bolts as they break easily - Toque to 11 ft/lbs Rod |

I agree with Tom that a surface grinder is best, but it can be done by hand. When I removed the gear grooves with sanding paper on a flat surface I still managed to round off the flatness; not a good thing when you're aiming for oil tightness.... I used a glass plate and valve grinding paste to correct my overenthusiastic actions to restore the flatness, I finished it off with a coarse cleaner (polish). On the picture you can see that on the edges there was still some roundness but the pump is dry and pressure is good. Hello Mort. Here is a picture of a typical before cover and after the cover has been ground. The before cover(on the left) has a groove that is .007 deep. Also if the body and cover are in good condition (flat) you do not need copper washers you should use lock washers. Copper washers are used because the body and cover are not flat and allow the oil to seep out to the bolts, the washers perform as gaskets. The ground cover is for a pump that I'm reconditioning. When hand grinding use a figure 8 motion. This will prevent bowing and result in a very flat surface. (A trick picked up from grinding quartz crystals, used in ham radio transmitters. circ. 1948) Jim B. |

Thank you all for the comments. Very helpful indeed. I just watched John Twist's video on oil pumps. He suggests using a small amount of Permatex's "Right Stuff" on the outer periphery of the two surfaces. Also a bit of sealant on the bolt stems. I'm glad he mentioned that the four long bolts are actually two different sizes. I had missed that. This is a tricky installation because the engine is still in the car. I had to dismantle the pump to get it off because of interference with the frame. I withdrew the steering column, the stabilizer and loosened the front engine mounting bolts and then put a jack under the front of the engine. Then it only took a few four letter words to get it out. Trying to put it back should be interesting. I'm preparing a list of new words. Mort |

mort, did you pull the upper radiator hose? if not, the tank can separate from the core..don't ask me how i know. regards, tom |

Wow - That's good to know and remember. There is a whole new set of words to cover that - I'll bet..... Rod |

The upside was I learned I can resolder a radiator. Regards, Tom |

Yes Tom, unfortunately over the years I have become quite an expert in removing my radiator. It now resides in the laundry room. Mort |
