MG TD TF 1500 - Oil pump primer

Hi,
I have just put the rebuilt engine in my TD. I have a question regarding oil pump primer before start the engine. I want to know if I can fill the oil filter removing the cap side oil filter ?
I noticed that for priming the oil pump it necessary to fill oil into priming plug hole and rotating the engine in reverse with a rear wheel in 4 gear. You confirm ?

Hi Roussel,

I recently rebuilt my TF engine and filled the pump gears with vaseline, filled the filter with oil, squirted oil into the primer plugs etc. but when I turned the engine over on the battery there was no oil pressure at all. Eventually someone on this site advised that I seal off the breather with a cork and blow compressed air down the dip stick tube with blow gun. Just a couple of blasts and excellent oil pressure! My brother who is also rebuilding a TF had the same problem and used this trick as well.

Thank you Jan for the good idea. Just à question from a french people, me : what is the breather ? The fitting to the oil pressure gauge ? Can you post à picture please ?

the "breather" is the opening in the engine side cover (tappet cover) on the driver side of the engine on the XPAG, with a tube attached to allow fumes to escape the crankcase. regards, tom

Ok? Thank you for answer. It is the tube on the picture attached (blue arrow).

Jan,
Did you set the compressor down to a low setting? If so about how many psi?

I assume you applied the pressure while starting?

Thanks,

And to fill the oil filter, it is possible by removing the cap side oil filter and fill oil in this hole ?

Roussel Didier

Hi Mort,

I didn't attempt to start the engine until the gauge registered a pressure on the starter motor.I'm not certain what the pressure was but the compressor is normally set for inflating tyres so it's probably 30 psi. I simply put my blow gun nozzel in the dip stick tube and gave it a couple of blasts - the engine wasn't turning. I think the theory is the air pushes the oil in the sump through the filter and into the pump. If you check the archives you will find my original posting on oil pressure and see who gave me the advice.

Or, the compressed air is pushing the gauge up to indicate a reading of oil pressure...

Hi,
I have try the method with filling oil in the primming plug hole with success. After 10 seconds without sparkplug, I was happy to read 40 psi on the gauge. After fitting sparkplug, the engine has started easily with a 55-60 psi preasure. I am so happy to hear the engine voice after 9 month of silence. It's like a reborn !!!
