MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Pumps-Early Verses Late

Seems like the early TD oil pumps up to 14223 were changed and from 14224 up to and including the TF were the same. Question, will the later pumps fit and replace the earlier ones? Is there a modification that needs to be done to do this, or they just can't be changed over. PJ

Hello Paul. They can be changed. You need to remove the bypass valve from the block, plug the oil inlet in the block where the oil pipe from the external filter attaches and then remove the filter holder and plug the bolt holes. The question is why do you want to do this?

Butch, I don't, but someone else wanted to know if it was possible, he wants to go to a spin on filter arrangement. I couldn't answer his question, reason for mine. PJ

If he has an early pump setup, Bob. Greneau (sp?)
Sells a billet spin on adapter that fits the original clamp setup on the external filter arraignment. I have on on my car as the Moss replacement filter cans are too damn messy to work with when changing oil. Uses multiple common sizes.

Hi Paul. I also make the spin on adapters.

On the "later" late pumps, with the integral filter, there is also an additional plug, on the end cap, which aids in priming the pump.

My (very) early 53 TD does not have this plug. I wish it had.

Should have been "Very early 52 TD" not 53

I'm not sure anyone has quite said it - a spin-off adapter for EITHER oil pump is available from Butch or Bob. There is no need to change anything on the early pump; just unbolt the filter can and re-bolt the new adapter in place, tightening the clamp. On the later pump the central nipple and plate are unscrewed (easy), and then the adapter is screwed on.

No need to remove or replace any pump.

While I liked the looks of the old canister oil filter on my early TD, changing to the spin on was one of the best improvements I could make. The big metal canisters were 1, not available locally, and 2, not inexpensive. So they did not get changed as frequently as I like. Now, no oil change without a filter change, and I have a great variety (and opinions on which is best) to pick from.

Butch made my spin on adaptor and it is perfect, what a great improvement.
