MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Recommendations please

I need what the latest thinking is on what are good oils to use. I know there was not enough zinc etc and the archives seem old on this issue. I think some companies started giving us what we need. Brands and types? Also I drive the TF only when it is 40 or more out. What weight rec 10/40/ 15/40 10/50 or 15/50? It is a newly restored engine and I am using petroleum not synthetics for first 2,000 miles, per rec from a synthetic (Red Line) oil company!

Mr Murphy,

Recommended oils have been discussed heavily before in this forum archives. Do a search and enjoy the reading. You will get a lot of hits in the search results.

I am a big fan of Red Line oils. Packed with the zinc and phosphorus needed to protect flat tappet cams.

Red Line has an application chart. http://www.redlineoil.com/application.aspx

Be sure to use the MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil in the gearbox to protect the soft metal in the gear box and use it to lubricate the steering since that too has brass as well.

Quantity amounts are in the WSM.

There were some useful contributions on the recent Oils aren't Oils thread in the archive dealing with engine & gearbox.

Unless the person is trying to sell you an additive, the consensus among the professionals is unless you are running a cam/lifter set up with really high spring pressures..modern oils have plenty of zinc for our engines. Regards, Tom

A few things that I found with oil. Find one you are comfortable with, but given the TD will use some oil, I stay with one I can buy just about anywhere.

All my cars MGTD, MGB GT and Mazda RX8 run valvoline VRI racing oil. May be overkill, but I can buy a case and take care of all the cars.

Thanks, looking over the archives, I bought the Valvoline VR 1 20/50. I also have some of the ZDDP additive to use up, do you think it is safe to add or can I do overkill?
K E MURPHY

Yup. Dialkyd Zinc DiothioPhosphate - an absolute must and Valvoline VR1 20/50 an outstanding choice, but there are others too.

And I go with Frank on the MT90. I don't know how I ever ran my TF without it. Not sure its available in OZ though.

Usually when the topic of oil comes up it's time to get the popcorn.
